There used to be a group of us, here on FR, who were either from RSA, has family there, or did business there and we tried and tried to counter all of the garbage and misinformation posted by those who neither knew nor understood this topic. Sadly almost all of that group gave up, because it's a losing battle, as is blatantly obvious by a good many comments on this thread...including yours!

I live in South Africa in Johannesburg. Sadly if I leave it will be with a worthless currency and tough wherever I go. I have wealthy friends who have left and some who stay as with money here you can buy security and live the good life with barbecues and visits to exclusive safari lodges. I would like to make some points controversial or not-
There is a huge movement now in SA away from the ANC to the EFF and BFLF movements. The ANC policy is essentially reverse apartheid and the world says nothing. Whites are less than 7% of the population now and shrinking. The ANC Govt has quotas for blacks the majority in sport education jobs etc. This is the majority remember persecuting the minority.
Apartheid is 25 years dead. Yet everything in SA is defined by the ANC as white indian coloured and black. Society is stressed and divided. It is disgusting. The EFF are more extreme than the ANC and the Black First Land First movement publicly call for the murder of whites.
The EFF leader Julius Malema has hinted he is behind the farm murders and yes farm murders are real. Cyril Ramaphosa lies to the world when he said they are not real. I personally know of a famous farmer near Cape town who was murdered for no reason ie nothing was stolen, it was political- he supplied strawberries to a major supermarket chain. If you read the ANCs manifesto from the 1990s it says that they will tax the whites to the extreme and let crime run rampant as a way to keep whites unsettled etc and that is exactly what they are doing.
One can argue back and forth- when the whites settled in the Cape in the 1600s they encountered no Bantu ie black tribes who came from the north later on. But today the blacks increasingly wish to persecute whites for previous generations sins.
Most of the tax money goes to Govt positions many of which are inflated in salary and have no useful purpose. It is simply jobs for pals of ANC members. The result is corruption and inefficiency on a massive scale with utilities such as sewage plants and electricity plants not being maintained willfully and this is the norm.
Basically the ANC is destroying SA while enriching a small black elite and with the goal of taking the white man down in an act of revenge for the past. In the process the black elite care not for the poor black masses and use them as voting pawns. Add to this open borders and the millions of illegal immigrants from Zim where Mugabe destroyed that economy and you have literally black mobs out to rape murder loot steal as the can- targetting whites yes but also blacks who have money bmws etc. It is like a free for all wild west theft scenario.
SA is consistently listed in the top 10 dangerous places in the world to live. There is a war here- low level civil war called crime. If you wish to blame apartheid- do so- but then also do your history research and see how the black tribes massacred each other long before apartheid- research the mfikane and dfikane and the zulu treatment of other tribes.
Much of the crime in SA has political connections, incl rhino poaching, linked to the chinese too- and much crime is linked to zulu men who when you have violent crime you will often find the zulus involved. Add to this mix drugs, human smuggling, etc.
Crime in SA is often violent and often involves 3 or 4 perps- car hijackings happen daily- and petty crime is incredibly high probably the world’s highest. You leave anything in plain view or unattended whether a laptop or tablet or cellphone- it will be stolen within a few seconds or minutes guaranteed.
If you display valuable such as jewellery expect to be mugged. It will happen. I have been mugged in a park in Pretoria on a fine sunny Sunday afternoon and the perps worked as gardeners in the park- they were not dirt poor- to blame apartheid for them mugging me is disingenious. At some point you have to stop blaming apartheid for everything and build a positive future- but the ANC is doing the opposite- they are literally destroying SA the economy the environment with polluted rivers, through to the fabric of society with violent crime and petty crime affecting all whether white black or pink or alien.
To give you an idea- my parents stay in a posh suburb in Sandton Johannesburg. My father was at a supermarket buying a lottery ticket last week and four men (one a driver) so it was 3 men robbed the store- an armed civilian shot 1 perp dead and tackled 1 down. The 3rd perp ran out and got away with the driver. The perp was shot dead within arm’s length of my father. The supermarket was full of shoppers at the time. Seeing as the ANC classifies everything by race- the 4 perps were black.
Earlier this week I was having my car washed also in Sandton, and a car hijacking took place down the road. The perps were black. One armed member of the public ran after them for some reason, he was black. The lady in the hijacked Merc- black. Crime in SA affects everyone- and the ANC lets this happen- this is daily life in SA. One has to be so aware that one becomes stressed and paranoid.
Yesterday in my suburb- not in Sandton- I drove past another car hijacking- this time the perps were caught, and it was 4 black guys. The security who caught them were black. The hijacked lady was white. The perps were from Zim - I chatted to the security guys one of whom knows the Zimbos who come across the border as he lives where they live and he told me that they absolutely hate whites and do not wish to work rather they choose crime as a lifestyle choice. You want to blame apartheid in SA for Mugabe destroying Zimbabwe’s economy? These guys flood across the open border which causes friction with local black people who say there are not enough jobs for all. SA has an official unemployment rate of 25% while the real rate is likely 40-50% with millions of unemployed youth. A time bomb with no solution leading to more crime- SA has no future. These Zimbos for example are not poor South Africans- they are criminals by choice. Anyway, it is complex but there is no hope here at all.
One needs to factor in other angles. Apartheid or was it the mine economy? meant that many black men left families to work on the mines. This led to a breakdown in the black family structure with no father figures- leading to youth insubordination, crime, poverty etc.
It gets more complex- the various black tribes, Xhosa Zulu Sotho etc- the Venda Tsonga Tswana Swati Pedi Ndebele and from Zim the Shangaan and Shona- have lax attitudes to sex and partners. Many black men have a wife and a “bafazi” (girlfriend) or 2 or 3 on the side. The result is a high birth rate and absent fathers and many kids end up as street kids. The cycle continues, being that of poverty crime lack of opportunity and lack of jobs. The thieving corrupt ANC Govt has a plan to enrich themselves, same as Mugabe did in Zim- but no plan to help the poor black masses exit the cycle of poverty crime high birth rates and absent fathers.
The police force here has efficient patches but is largely corrupt slow inefficient and many policemen and women are illiterate and easily bribed. Most are black as the ANC has a policy to employ very few whites in the police force and many police members are blatantly racist towards white people which is tolerated by the ANC. Thus one cannot trust the police and private security and community security groups are the outcome of this. All this costs money so whites and the black middle class need to pay taxes and then pay more for private security and private healthcare etc which is a form of double taxation in a way. So life has become expensive and add to this the weak Rand, and this is why middle class whites and blacks (many blacks wish to leave SA) cannot just leave- the USA Canada Australia etc don’t want us but they want militant muslim refugees who do not assimilate..go figure.
The poor black masses know no better and there are now too poor white squatter camps which have no access to basic utilities such as water and lights and sanitation. The poor black camps do have these provided by the ANC govt- this is apartheid in reverse. Middle class whites and blacks are stuck here, and all are affected by taxes and high levels of crime. It is just getting worse. The black elite have it great here now, and the white elite either have left or have plans to leave when they feel their luxurious good days are over for real.
This beautiful country with amazing scenery and wildlife and friendly people and a sunny climate - is being absolutely raped by the selfish racist corrupt ANC. Mandela must be turning in his grave.
It will never happen. They are decent, hard working folks who would probably overwhelmingly vote Republican.
On the other hand, after the local tyrants turn the place into a total 3rd world sh!thole like Rhodesia/Zimbabwe, you can bet your bottom dollar the Dems will scream to let the poor starving (black) refugees in who are fleeing the chaos they unleashed. They will vote for more "free" sh!t so they are OK to let in.

Hey jerk, you know nothing about SA. I am a Boer. I speak Afrikaans. I also know the SA Brits as a rule are lib jerks. Afrikaaners (Boers) went and farmed. The farms had schools and churches for their paid workers... not slaves, free men. The black leaders are brilliant at theft and manipulation and can not or are unwilling to act benevolently.

However, as an avid reader of The Economist magazine in the 70s and 80s, I developed the clear impression that the white South African government was modeled after a European welfare state.
I've tried, but as you can tell, such facts are either ignored or poo pooed. Hopefully, your post will open some posters' eyes at last.

I, personally know, a LOT of expats living here and Afrikaaners still living in RSA. Of that number, I know two, JUST TWO, stupid women, one in the USA, one living in RSA, who are NOT conservatives and the one here doesn't vote GOP. She's one of 30+ people I knew/know personally and well who are Boers.
If you were to believe what has been written about Desmond Tutu, in Western papers and said on T.V., you would believe that he is a much honored/revered personage in RSA. The TRUTH is, he is seen as a clown and a JOKE over there!
Want to actually learn something about RSA and her people, read the posts, here, by posters in RSA and those who have relatives living there and NO ONE ELSE's comments and learn the truth!

I had no reason to distrust it.
In any event, my current understanding is that most white South Africans vote for the Democratic Alliance.
The Democratic Alliance talks tough on crime, and it pays lip service to free market economics, but everything else in their political platform - guaranteed income, national health care, etc. - still sounds like European Socialism.
Bottom Line - if all 4.5 million white South Africans moved to the USA, we would be lucky if half of them voted for the GOP.
