A statue of Mahatma Gandhi, the famed Indian independence leader, has been removed from a university campus in Ghana's capital, Accra.
University of Ghana lecturers began a petition for its removal shortly after it was unveiled in 2016 by India's former President Pranab Mukherjee.
The petition said Gandhi was "racist" and African heroes should be put first.
In the wake of the row, Ghana's government at the time said the statue would be relocated.
Lecturers and students told the BBC that the statue, originally located at the university's recreational quadrangle, had been removed on Wednesday.
The university confirmed this, saying that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration was responsible.
Law student Nana Adoma Asare Adei told the BBC: "Having his statue means that we stand for everything he stands for and if he stands for these things [his alleged racism], I don't think we should have his statue on campus."

Gandhi was also extremely clever in the way of his countrymen. The idea was that if the Congress could get the Brits to leave the Japanese would never have enough troops to really occupy India. The big cities such as Calcutta and government centers such as Delhi, yes. The massive bulk of India , no. Especially as the Mahatma calculated the Japanese would have the bulk of their land forces tied up in China indefinitely. The Japanese might kill alot of Hindus but in the end they would be strategically frustrated by mass civil disobedience. Even if it took some years, what was that in the enormous spectrum of Indian history. Gandhi didn't care for big cities and modernism anyway , he saw the essence of India in the masses of peasants adhering to an unchanging pattern of rural life. The Japanese would grow tired and mostly leave, the British would be gone, India could return to its eternal cycle of life pretty much undisturbed by modernism. For the rest they would have to figure it out for themselves.

Pliny the Elder wrote, "There's always something new out of Africa."
Little did he imagine...
African heroes? Hannibal? Khufu? Cleopatra? Augustine of Hippo? Hatshepsut? St. Athanasius? Septimius Severus? Thutmose III?

They’re probably thinking Mobutu Sese Seko, Jomo Kenyatta or Moïse Tshombe

Gandhi had lots of secrets. Like serving in an India regiment of the British Army in WWI and attaining the rank of sergeant major.
Like maintaining close relations with the Indian community in South Africa and making it clear that they were racially separated from whites only by superficials such as skin tone. Even Hitler regarded Hindus as Aryans.
A Hindu once boasted to me, “Our skin may be dark but our hair is straight!”.
His call for nonviolent surrender to the Axis powers was based on his experience with the civilized British. BTW, he bent the British to his will by going on hunger strikes; they feared the chaos that would erupt if he died & they never called his bluff. After all, what good are naked teenybopper groupies if you’re dead?
Almost think the Africans may have a point here. On the Dark Continent, Gandhi was closer to British colonialism than in India itself.

Uncle Idi Amin Dada.
At least one of his sons is in the UK with a homicide conviction.

Didn’t he used to kill, cook and eat his enemies? I read that somewhere.

Amin also loved the cartoon 'Tom and Jerry' so much he had his own collection.

Idi Amin loved cannibal jokes, like what do you call a cannibal who devoured his mother in law?
