Several people have been wounded in a shooting incident in the eastern French city of Strasbourg, police say. The French Interior Ministry confirmed a "serious public security incident" in the city and urged residents to stay indoors. The shooting is said to have happened close to a Christmas market in one of the central squares, Place Kleber. One report citing the French fire department said one person had been killed, but this was not confirmed. Security official have cordoned off the area and trams have been stopped, according to reports. Local journalist Bruno Poussard wrote on Twitter that there had been a dozen shots fired on his street in the city centre - one or two to begin with, then in bursts. Emmanuel Foulon, a press officer for the European Parliament, wrote that there was "panic" in the centre following the sound of gunfire and that police with guns were running through the streets. Strasbourg deputy mayor Alain Fontanel tweeted: "Shooting in downtown Strasbourg. Thank you all for staying home while waiting for a clarification of the situation."

The wounded were seen lying on the floor and desperately taking shelter as the market and nearby restaurants were evacuated.
Chilling videos capture terrified people cowering on the floor and running in fear.
Police armed with machine guns were seen running into Place Kleber.
Emergency services in France confirmed the shooting, and said the gunman remains on the loose.
People have been warned to stay indoors by authorities.
Witnesses have said online there are other people injured on the floor.
A BBC reporter says on Twitter a French journalist “saw soldiers shoot a man dead, who was reportedly targeting them.”
They obviously need more and stricter gun control laws in France...................

We were there yesterday, at the Christmas market. Security was present. Bags and backpacks were cursory glanced at. We passed four fatigue dressed army patrol. Lots of local police. Safe tonight in Frankfurt.

We spent the last two weeks at Christmas markets in the Rhine valley. Saw lots more security in France than in Germany.

Glad you’re safe - I’m in Paris now and there are police all over the place, but it’s for the yellow vest wannabes, and they’re really not a problem if you don’t go where they are. The Muslims have been threatening Christmas markets everywhere though.
