Veteran leftist Andrés Manuel López Obrador took office as Mexican president on Saturday, vowing to see off a “rapacious” elite in a country struggling with corruption, chronic poverty and gang violence on the doorstep of the United States.
Backed by a gigantic Mexican flag, the 65-year-old took the oath of office in the lower house of Congress, pledging to bring about a “radical” rebirth of Mexico to overturn what he called a disastrous legacy of decades of “neo-liberal” governments.
“The government will no longer be a committee at the service of a rapacious minority,” said the new president, who is often nicknamed AMLO. Nor would the government, he said, be a “simple facilitator of pillaging, as it has been.”
López Obrador later addressed a massive crowd of supporters in the heart of the capital, promising to put Mexico’s sizeable indigenous minority first in his drive to root out inequality.
A major challenge facing the new leader is managing relations with Mexico’s top trading partner, the United States, after repeated broadsides by President Donald Trump against Mexico over illegal immigrants crossing the U.S. border. …

At the time that movie was in the theaters (I never saw it) I used the word plethora in a report for work. Several people who read it piped up, “What is this word, Pethora”?
I had no clue.
Historically IIRC, communists were drug pushers’ best friends. Especially if they were seeking to saturate the US with illicit drugs.

But that’s what needs to be done. When this commie takes over you’re gonna see waves of millions of peasants pouring across the border. If the government won’t stop it you’re gonna have to get up from the keyboard and rally with other like minded citizens and defend what we have left of this decayed country.

As I recall, he's a Red from way back, and seems still to talk like it. An INTER-nationalist, which is to say someone out for himself. Unless he has some epiphany of not wanting to end up like Venezuela, the expected route would be to overturn what he called the neo-liberal "elites" and replace them with his family and whatever crooked zillionaires have been paying his bills all these years.
I will be praying that he fears winding up on the wrong end of a "necklace," takes a lesson from the "riches to rags" movie that is Caracas, and decides to go Trump on Mexico. But without a culture of personal and public virtue, it will be hard. And dangerous. Will he go Mao on Mexico instead? It's been done before, in the 1920s.
AMLO is whiter than rice and could easily be mistaken for an American older white dude. The fact is that the rulers of Mexico are run by white descendants of Spain. The poor people that are fleeing into the U.S. are Mestizos, darker-skinned Mexicans of Indian heritage.
There are also blacks in Mexico who get mistreated just like blacks do in Cuba.
Mexico's Constitution, in that they have a federal governement and states, is modeled after the U.S. It just amazes me why this country and other Central and Latin American nations are poor. If they would just adopt capitalism and the rule of law, they wouldn't have to flee their countries. In fact, they would probably be beating the U.S. economically.
By which he certainly does not mean the cartels.
