Judge Grants CNN’s Motion to Restore Jim Acosta’s White House Press Pass
The Wall Street Journal ^ | 16 Nov 18 | Byron Tau

The cable network made an emergency request so its correspondent could have access to the White House as lawsuit continues.

WASHINGTON—A federal judge granted an emergency motion to restore the White House press credential of CNN correspondent Jim Acosta—a victory for the network in a closely watched press-freedom case.

The lawsuit could determine whether the government can ban individual reporters from public buildings.

District Judge Timothy Kelly, who was appointed to the bench by President Trump, granted CNN’s request for a restraining order temporarily restoring Mr. Acosta’s press access to the White House while the case proceeds.

Lawyers for Mr. Acosta, the network’s chief White House correspondent, argued that the unusual revocation of a reporter’s press pass by the White House last week necessitated emergency action.

Mr. Trump has regularly attacked CNN, and Thursday’s ruling was a setback for the White House. Government lawyers acknowledged in court they knew of no other situation where the White House had revoked a press pass under similar circumstances.

The legal maneuvering was part of a CNN lawsuit alleging that the Trump administration violated Mr. Acosta’s First Amendment right to gather news, as well as his due-process right to challenge a government-imposed punishment. Judge Kelly didn’t rule on the merits of CNN’s overall case.

Your question is ridiculous.
Trump obviously has the will power to ignore any question.

If you do not think he does, you should not have voted for him.

Did you?

Fair enough. I would reinstate it, along with 150 other ADDITIONAL press members who will also get passes as well. But this will now require overflow seating and an updated seating plan. A nearby outdoor tent for simulcast press briefings would be erected and Acosta will find his seat located there.

Very innovative....

This is how it is handled during in house Q&A sessions in some major corporations. Employees get to speak through a mike held by an assigned person. It works.. The press should not get to control it. When you watch the full Acosta video you can clearly see he has no intent on relinquishing the Mike before he does his arm bar maneuver...

And if Acosta starts saying that the President must be afraid of tough questions, he can say, "no, we have to protect our staff, and this procedure helps to prevent members of the press from struggling with our interns for control of the microphone. Not that anyone would ever do that....."

There should be NO White House press conferences. There is no requirement that these dog and pony shows be scheduled. A Democrat president only has to sign autographs for his press groupies at these sessions, while Republican presidents are viciously attacked and disrespected, so they are a total waste of time.

Oh I would call on him first and let him ask his question then I simply would move on to the next person. As soon as Baby Jimmy starts whining and interrupting I would cancel the rest of the conference. I would do that everyday until his peers exert pressure on this clown to behave.

“First answer is to end breifings.”

Just set up a 21st century remote briefing presser. All questions are taken via live remote and questioners get to ask their question.

Never give CNN another chance and allow different reporters across the country chances to log in and ask a question.

You’d have far better inquiry from media and none of this grandstanding garbage and of course, you’d never have to deal with Acosta or an Acosta type. When they start their speech-making, you cut them off and move on to a real question.

That’s the real solution here. Move the ball into the 21st century.

“nothing saying he has to be allowed into the press room”

Or nothing saying Trump or Sanders will allow him to ask a question.

I guess he could be kicked out of the room but not suspended if he again gets out of line.

Freedom of reporters to get to news sources is important. Today’s ruling is an abstract recognition of that.

They need to put the intern on TV and have her cry that this judge is traumatizing her.

As I thought, the judge has created a mandatory “due process” for withdrawing a press credential into the White House.

It’s obtuse.

But you know, this will actually be a win.

Another nice way to handle this and have those in the press corps despise him...

Throw them all out and just send out a memo. The administration doesn’t have to let anyone in.
