The cable network made an emergency request so its correspondent could have access to the White House as lawsuit continues.
WASHINGTONA federal judge granted an emergency motion to restore the White House press credential of CNN correspondent Jim Acostaa victory for the network in a closely watched press-freedom case.
The lawsuit could determine whether the government can ban individual reporters from public buildings.
District Judge Timothy Kelly, who was appointed to the bench by President Trump, granted CNNs request for a restraining order temporarily restoring Mr. Acostas press access to the White House while the case proceeds.
Lawyers for Mr. Acosta, the networks chief White House correspondent, argued that the unusual revocation of a reporters press pass by the White House last week necessitated emergency action.
Mr. Trump has regularly attacked CNN, and Thursdays ruling was a setback for the White House. Government lawyers acknowledged in court they knew of no other situation where the White House had revoked a press pass under similar circumstances.
The legal maneuvering was part of a CNN lawsuit alleging that the Trump administration violated Mr. Acostas First Amendment right to gather news, as well as his due-process right to challenge a government-imposed punishment. Judge Kelly didnt rule on the merits of CNNs overall case.

All FReepers are “journalists.” We write for the FreeRepublic publication on a daily basis. Where are out press passes?
FRiends,
I must reluctantly say that it is past time for our side to stop talking and take up arms against these usurpers of liberty while we still can.
Cato
How many divisions does the judge have?
Agreed. face to face is antiquated anyway. Email, teleconference, VTC....there are a number of higher tech ways to do this. Hey I know, Twitter would work! lol
All right, who here believes President Trump would resist the urge to quarrel with Acosta if Acosta were in the room?
“F U judge!”
The White House should just quietly not comply.
Just to see what the judge and CNN will do. And, of course, the US Congress.
Which will be nothing but bitch. And moan.
A Federal Presidential Judge will simply order that the White House must resume holding press conferences.
Then A Federal Presidential Judge will rule that Jim Acosta is the only “reporter” that can ask questions.
Then A Federal Presidential Judge will rule that Jim Acosta is the only “reporter” that may attend the mandatory conferences.
Then A Federal Presidential Judge will rule that The White House must answer to Jim Acosta.
Then Jeff Flake will sponsor legislation that protects Jim Acosta from Trump.
Welcome to Hell.
Ditto here, “Manhunter News Agency: We don’t pass judgment, we leave that to God, but happy to arrange the meeting.”
Why even continue the briefings?
So true. Every single time I see "A federal judge has..." I know we are in deep trouble. There was a time not long ago where you rarely saw that phrase.
President Trumps next tweet should simply say “Make me.”
I suppose the reasoning was the WH couldn’t lock out a major and if they chose to send an areshole, so be it. As to not calling on him, he’ll shout out his soundbites anyway. Cancel the briefings while this plays out.
What is the protocol for seating arrangements in WH pressers? Is there a pecking order? Can he be put in the back corner with a dunce cap?
Put him way in the back with the foreign press & bloggers.
Never call on him again.
Not good.
Unless this judge is going to order them to grant a press pass to EVERY journalist (including my brother, the one-man blogger) we have just created a privileged tier of “official” media in this country.
This ruling is beyond an absurdity. It makes a mockery of the law.
You think Acosta won’t shout over everyone else? And now with a judge saying he has a right to be there he will be even worse.
They just keep pushing don’t they...
And the President can tell the judge to go F*** himself. The President runs the White House, not the Judiciary.
