CBS News Inaccurately Names AR-15 as Mass Shooters’ ‘Weapon of Choice’

During the November 4 airing of CBS News’s 60 Minutes, they inaccurately described the AR-15 as mass shooters’ “weapon of choice.”

The claim that the AR-15 is the “weapon of choice” is widely reported and it is Fake New 101. In fact, to make the claim even nominally palatable, 60 Minutes host Scott Pelley only referenced five mass shooting events, all of which happened in the last six years and all which involved an AR-15 or an AR-15 and various handguns.

Those five shootings were the Tree of Life Synagogue (October 27, 2018), the church in Sutherland Springs, Texas (November 5, 2017), the Las Vegas concert (October 1, 2017), the Marjorie Stoneman Douglas High School in Florida (February 14, 2018), and the Sandy Hook Elementary School attack (December 14, 2012).

Related — I bet that stick would get you kicked out of school. Especially if you pointed it at someone.

That’s what I was thinking except the barrel length makes me think M1A match perhaps.

Saw the notch for it, but the old eyes (and monitor) couldn’t couldn’t make out the the selector. But you are 100% correct. The selector is what makes the difference between M14 military and M1A civilian. Springfield arms still cuts the notch for it.

No, they did not *inaccurately name* it.

They outright lied.

***They also referred to “AR-15 bullets.”***

You mean the old Remington .222 Special? Falls between the Rem .222 and the Rem .222 Magnum.

Also shoots fine in my Savage bolt action rifle.

Remember when the AK-47s was the bad boy? The news media showed how deadly they were when they shot a water melon. Problem was, the bullets only punched holes in the melon, so they rigged up another melon and using a different firearm and soft nose bullets got the melon to explode.

That night on the news you see a man shoot an AK, then cut to a melon exploding.

Years ago I was watching “COPS” and an LA County deputy stated that them AK-47s can take out a telephone pole. Okee Dokee! I suppose if you had enough ammo it could happen.

I thought there were actually complaints about the M-16 round in Vietnam because it was not nearly as effective as the AK’s used by the NVA.

Probably the bigger issue was that when both weapons are exposed to dirt, mud, moisture and receive less than optimal maintenance the AK tends to be more reliable. AKs are built to less stringent tolerances and it has been found that the design can just take more abuse from people with less training. Even the berdan primed steel cased cartridges that come from surplus Eastern block “spam cans” are incredibly reliable no matter what you do to them.

It reminds me of the first time I went to a range with a surplus $59 Mosin-Nagant rifle. The ugly old rifle was actually reasonably accurate. Then one of the spent crappy enameled surplus steel cased 7.62x54 cartridges got stuck in it. I was fiddling with the thing; my friend who is a big muscular black Vietnam combat career veteran said he knew how to get it out. He took it from me and hit the bolt by slamming the rifle against the bench a couple times and the cartridge popped out. I was horrified, but the rifle was just as accurate after this abuse.

Nice collectors item, but technology has left it behind. A better choice is a Ruger SR-762.

The initial run of M16 rifles for Vietnam had rifling at 1:14 or 1:12. Not fast enough to stabilize a 55 gr .223 bullet. Poor long range accuracy and a horrific tumbling terminal performance. Current rifles are 1:8 or 1:7 to stabilize 62 gr to 69 gr bullets. It was just a poor spec at the start. A .22LR 40 gr bullet is fine with 1:12 or 1:14 rifling twist. A 1:9 is satisfactory for 55 gr bullets.
