Breaking: @joyent, Gabs new hosting provider, has just pulled our hosting service. They have given us until 9am on Monday to find a solution. Gab will likely be down for weeks because of this. Working on solutions. We will never give up on defending free speech for all people.
(Excerpt) Read more at twitter.com ...
“I hope whoever is hosting FR is more resistant to this kind of pressure. “
FR doesn’t need a “host” ... it operates its website from its own self-owned, self-maintained servers ...
“you cant use a dns because that requires a host”
utter nonsense. DNS requires a registrar, not a host ... and there are thousands of registrars around the world ... so one does not even need a U.S. registrar ...
“Is it feasable to host yourself? No, it’s not.”
Uh, FR hosts its own website on its own servers that it wholly owns ... you have no idea what you’re talking about ...
“Where would you get your public IP address from and your domain nam?”
from any one of thousands of foreign registrars, that’s where ... you people spreading nonsense about DNS, hosting, etc. have no idea what you are talking about ...
I voted for President Trump. I helped get him elected. I don’t brag about this, but in 2016 across all of my accounts I had BILLIONS of impressions supporting and defending him and America. Can we get one tweet defending Gab.com, our work with law enforcement to bring a terrorist to justice, and our defense of free speech online for all people? Is that too much to ask?
Gab.com is one of the good guys. For those disgusted by the anti-Semite talk just remember free speech cuts both ways. You are free to say what you want (excluding pushing for violence) and those you disagree with are also free to say what they want even if you hate it. That's the nature of free speech. You can always block (mute) those who say things you vehemently disagree with much like the choice to not read DU.
If you think Domain name registrars don’t have blacklists you haven’t been paying attention.
Read about the problems the Daily Stormer had. I think they are dark beer now.
But the dark beer thing is pretty funny
I have never heard of a private company, that works for the post office as a subcontractor, trashing mail that goes through their hands because they don't like the political persuasion of the sender or the addressee. If they did, they would end up in prison.
It’s my understanding the FR servers are hosted at a building just for server and website hosting. These server rooms are kept cool and with minimal dust. There is a 3rd party needed to access the web for the FR servers and they are paid for this service and the bandwidth they provide. John R has access to these servers in the case of a software or hardware malfunction.
As long as these server/hosting companies are non-biased and non partisan the system works perfectly. The second any one of them take a partisan position the system falls apart which is why heavy-handed and severe regulation is needed as much as I find it distasteful. When companies are unable to stay fair they need to be told what to do like an errant child.
Another concern is whether they could blackmail the DNS provider to revoke the FR URL name (or any name of somebody they don’t like). These characters are persistent (like in Hillary’s “persist”). If the current DNS management does not cooperate, they could try to replace them.
the dns is a hosted service, it resides on a host, that’s all a registrar is, they add you to the dns lookup
Gab has obtained a new hosting provider.
“Free Speech” boards attract the Stormfront crowd.
When the Nazis become enough of a problem, Torba will do something about it.

correct. and i strongly agree with out about the emerging need for strict fairness regulation, as much as I detest over-regulation ...
“the dns is a hosted service, it resides on a host, thats all a registrar is, they add you to the dns lookup”
all services on the web reside on servers, including registrar services, but not all services that resides on servers are hosting service ... to those of us who make a living doing this, “hosting” means website and/or email service hosting ... it can be done without a 3rd party host like FR does, but for 99.9999999999999% of people and companies it’s far cheaper and far more convenient to utilize a third-party hosting service ...

“Another concern is whether they could blackmail the DNS provider to revoke the FR URL name”
the difficulty in doing that is that there are thousands of registrar services (which are the companies where one leases domains and the starting point for DNS services), most of which are now in foreign countries, and many of those countries are neutral and/or actual enemies of the U.S., not to mention international treaties about interference in other countries’ registrars ... pretty much the only U.S. government option for such interference would be to do what China has done, which is to install international border routers and filter out selected items from foreign countries ...
I think it was a very bad idea for them to release all the guy's info without a subpoena. Didn't help them much anyway.
you could, but all your viewers would have to have a HAM license. Also, bandwidth sucks on shortwave. You would probably run afoul of FCC regs if you had https implemented as well.
Indeed. Multiple OC-3 trunks would be better.
