CBS' Garrett: More access to Trump than Obama, Bush, 'we see him all the time'
Washintong Examiner ^ | October 09, 2018 | Paul Bedard

Posted on 10/10/2018 7:27:30 AM PDT by Pollard

CBS White House correspondent Major Garrett doesn’t buy the portrayal of President Trump as an enemy of the media and a chief executive who has eliminated access for journalists.

“He loves us, and he hates us, and he loves us,” he said with a laugh.

“There is more access to this president than there was to Obama. We see him all the time. He takes questions a lot,” Garrett said. “We see him and interact with him and punch in questions with far more frequency than with Obama. Probably more so than for W. Bush,” he added.

Much more a student of the White House than a critic, Garrett however said that having access doesn’t make it easier to cover the president’s White House.

“It wears me out,” he told Secrets in an interview to talk about his latest insightful book, Mr. Trump’s Wild Ride .

While other presidents were more methodical and followed a standard path to making policy, Garrett said that Trump is sometimes impatient, and pushes for change with his morning tweets that forces his bureaucracy to catch up.

In other cases, policy will be developed through the normal channels, but then Trump will junk it when it reaches his desk.

As a result, Garrett said that he now is far more cautious than others before reporting on Trump decisions.

“I’m so careful about what’s proposed, what’s considered, what’s talked about. You get a lot of loose descriptions of things that are under discussion, or moving toward,” he said.

I remember Major Garrett waay back when he was on ‘America’s Voice’ aka Paul Weyrich’s ‘NET’.

Great guy best I could tell. Backed up my mother’s hard hitting question of a senator once even though she tricked the call screener.

Garrett probably spent time talking with Tom Fitton [Judicial Watch] in private.

Amazing seeing Trump answering questions for over an hour off the cuff. No TelePrompTer. Funny and smart.

Quite a contrast from the empty suit we were stuck with for eight years previous.

I think they are SLOWLY getting used to his style, which is ... unique. Quite unlike what they’re used to.

What we always knew: the press and the bureaucracy are lazy.

Obama hid from the press and the so-called “news” media never complained.

It sounds like Trump’s management style uses rapid A-B testing, iterative processes, and is much more agile. I think that’s probably a good thing in DC.

So much policy has been created in assembly line fashion with no one calling out any problems until the final product is ready. Trump short circuits this process. When he sees a problem he’s much more likely to scrap it and start over early in the process rather than waste time on what will be a bad result.

Major Garrett got his first big gig with Fox News before going to CBS. His reporting of Trump’s administration hasn’t been bad.

The only thing the MSM could do to better further their agenda would be to totally ignore Trump. Their smug Trump gotchas are always returned by Trump generally right down their throats. The press stooges just can’t help themselves though.

Obama never had a reason to talk to the media, they were all in lockstep doing his bidding and covering up all his corruption. Funny thing is they kissed his a$$ at an unprecedented level and he re-payed them by totally ignoring them. This behavior just shows depths the media will sink to if they think it will advance the liberal agenda, having themselves humiliated and treated with contempt by a president and still lining up to kiss his a$$.

How does Garret explain his mocking scowl he sports when reporting from the WH?

Obama hid from the press and the so-called “news” media never complained.

Not only did the "news media" never complain, they accepted every White House press release as gospel and published them virtually unchanged as if it was actual "news reporting."

The term media lapdogs comes to mind!

Exactly. He is up front about everything.

You are so right. Obama got so much inflated praise it was embarrassing, there was absolutely nothing transparent in his administration. Trump will talk pretty much anytime and anywhere to anybody (even CNN). Major is telling it like it is, and that is why it is refreshing and surprising. I am sure there will be someone from the DNC-Media-Matrix to throw battery acid in his eyes as he leaves his house, but it’s nice to see a journalist putting out a story that doesn’t have the left wing demented slant.
