Show How You Feel, Kavanaugh Was Told, and a Nomination Was Saved
New York Times ^ | October 6, 2018 | Peter Baker and Nicholas Fandos

Posted on 10/07/2018 9:03:42 AM PDT by reaganaut1

WASHINGTON — Judge Brett M. Kavanaugh sat in the anteroom of Room 216 in the Hart Senate Office Building, a sterile, living-room-like space with a couch and a couple of armchairs and a large television on the wall. His chances of joining the Supreme Court seemed to be vanishing. “Disaster,” read the text message from one Republican.

Christine Blasey Ford had just finished testifying that he had tried to force himself on her as a teenager, and nearly everyone in both camps found her credible, sincere and sympathetic. President Trump called Senator Mitch McConnell, the Republican leader, and they agreed she was impressive. “We’re only at halftime,” Mr. McConnell said, trying to be reassuring.

Mr. Trump thought it was time to bring in the F.B.I. to investigate, as many opponents of Judge Kavanaugh had urged, but when he called the Hart Building, Donald F. McGahn II, his White House counsel, refused to take the call. Instead, Mr. McGahn cleared the room and sat down with Judge Kavanaugh and his wife, Ashley Kavanaugh. The only way to save his nomination, Mr. McGahn said, was to show the senators how he really felt, to channel his outrage and indignation at the charges he had denied.

Judge Kavanaugh did not need convincing. He was brimming with rage and resentment, so when he went before the Senate Judiciary Committee, he did not hold back. His fire-and-fury performance — “you have replaced ‘advice and consent’ with search and destroy” — suddenly turned the tables. While Democrats thought he went too far, demoralized Republicans were emboldened again. In their war room, White House aides watching on television cheered and pumped their fists.

"Christine Blasey Ford had just finished testifying that he had tried to force himself on her as a teenager, and nearly everyone in both camps found her credible, sincere and sympathetic."

"Credible, sincere and sympathetic"?

#1, as a fair-minded person (I hope) who tries to overcome my own biases (I hope) I could concede that Ford was "sincere and sympathetic" if you give her the benefit of the doubt. But how the hell do you get "credible"? "Sincere and sympathetic" are functions of "sincerity" and "sympathy", the former being subjective, and the latter emotional. But "credible" is supposed to be fact-based, objective: does she have a clear, non-self-contradictory account? (No.) Does she have corroborating evidence? (No.) How do you get to "credible" when there's little consistency and no evidence?

#2, now indulging my own biases: I didn't (subjectively) get sympathetic, either. I have a moderate hearing disability. I don't follow audio accounts for that reason: things sound muffled to me, and I find it irksome to have to concentrate so hard on simple auditory intelligibility. I much prefer print accounts.

But I swear to God: my husband was listening to her testimony on the radio in the next room, and I heard her voice and (not knowing who she was) I yelled:

"Who IS that woman you're listening to?" My husband: "You can hear that?" Me: "Whoever it is, that's the most striking specimen of 'vocal fry' I've heard in years. This woman, whoever she is, is 'putting on the voice' to manipulate an audience."

Holy cow. It was so obvious a half-deaf person could hear it through a wall.

So no, I don't call her sympathetic OR credible.

Amirite?

Thanks be to God Kavanaugh was confirmed.

That's all I can say.

Hey NY Slimes, about two years ago, Donald Trump became President Trump and will have that title forever. Get used to it and quit calling him Mr. Trump in your supposedly 'fair' articles.

Her body language from the start was a dead give away...but when she started to speak it was clearly a show.

“They are just blasting through one rule and one tradition after another,” said Senator Richard J. Durbin of Illinois, the Democratic whip. “If that does not change, it is going to be hard to repair the institutional damage here.””

It’s just so hard to choose just which one of the RAT Senators to claim the “crown” for being the biggest piece of $hit in the Senate. I know Fineswine is moved way up the list, but Durbin gets my vote with “dishonorable mention” going to Leaky Pat Leahy.

Those were the Kavanaugh remarks which the useless Democatamite Jeff Flake called "partisan" -- Flake merely regurgitating the DNC talking points.

>>>Mr. McGahn cleared the room and sat down with Judge Kavanaugh and his wife, Ashley Kavanaugh<<<

Any odds on which of the only three People in the Room leaked this to the NYT, or is this just another Liberal Wet Dream?

One obvious lie was that President Trumps talking about her testimony at the rally wasnt helpful. It might of been the main turning point or one of them

Well she and her husband got a new home and relocation with thousands in their pay pal......they had to leak her story in order to use the press as reasons for their relocation. But they were no doubt ‘paid’ up front for this show.

“nearly everyone in both camps found her credible, sincere and sympathetic
I find this refrain so aggravating.”

Me too! And while everyone is “congratulating” Susan Collns, I still think she’s a piece of crap! For openers, all her boo hooing about how “something” most assuredly “happened” to Ford and then following up with the bull$hit notion that “her friend” Dianne Fineswine was a fine person, honorable and incapable of lying. If Maine can’t actually find a decent Republican to run as one of their Senators, they should leave the Union! Collins is a Swamp Creature!

Mr. McGahn said, was to show the senators how he really felt, to channel his outrage and indignation at the charges he had denied.

In other words, be honest with yourself and others.

Great advice.

I did not find her at all credible. And, if the truth be known, I will bet that 90% of people didn't.

The only way her story could be credible is if she was intellect impaired or 10 years old.

"The 90-day battle to install Judge Kavanaugh on the Supreme Court that ended on Saturday with a razor-thin 50-to-48 vote............

Do we remember the tax increase vote Al Gore had to break the tie during Clinton's era that was an "Overwhelming victory" for the Democrats? Republican = razor thin margin, but Democrat = overwhelming victory. Yay news media!
