Trump orders new FBI investigation into Kavanaugh after Senate request

President Trump on Friday asked the FBI to investigate sexual assault allegations against Brett Kavanaugh after Senate Republicans agreed to a one-week investigation, temporarily delaying his nomination to the Supreme Court.

“I’ve ordered the FBI to conduct a supplemental investigation to update Judge Kavanaugh’s file. As the Senate has requested, this update must be limited in scope and completed in less than one week,” Trump said in the statement released by the White House.

The Senate Judiciary Committee on Friday afternoon requested that Trump instruct the FBI to conduct the supplemental investigation after Sen. Jeff Flake (R-Ariz.) and others called for the move.

Flake said the FBI should conduct an investigation that is “limited in scope and time,” and said it should focus solely on credible accusations against Kavanaugh and last no longer than a week.

Multiple senators, including Sens. Susan Collins (R-Maine), Lisa Murkwski (R-Alaska), Joe Manchin (D-W.V.) and Heidi Heitkamp (D-N.D.) soon followed.

Flake, after outlining his call for the supplemental FBI investigation, joined other Republicans on the Judiciary Committee on Friday in voting to send Kavanaugh's nomination to the full Senate.

Republicans are set to hold a procedural vote on Kavanaugh's nomination on Saturday, though a final vote set for early next week is likely to be delayed to allow the FBI investigation to wrap up.

Democrats had been calling for such an investigation for days and received GOP support following a rollercoaster day on Capitol Hill on Thursday, when Kavanaugh and Christine Blasey Ford testified before the Judiciary panel.

Ford delivered gripping testimony outlining her allegation that Kavanaugh pinned her to a bed and tried to remove her clothes during a house gathering in 1982 when she and Kavanaugh were high schoolers.

Kavanaugh, who has flatly denied the allegations, offered a forceful defense of himself during the hearing. Speaking after Ford, the nominee called his confirmation process a "national disgrace" and insisted he had never sexually assaulted anyone.

Trump on Friday afternoon called Ford a "credible" witness and described her testimony as "compelling," but also praised Kavanaugh's performance and told reporters at the White House that he had given no thought to having another nominee.

I’m starting to want to physically assault ANYONE who uses the word “credible”. What’s next? Alyssa Milano making “credible” accusations against the entire Senate GOP, including Murkowski & Collins? She’s not a good actress, but she is at least as good as Ford.

“Not defining the limited scope means the Russian witch Hunt has taught him nothing”

I’m expecting credible allegations that Kavanaugh flew to Paris in an SR-71 to coordinate the outcome of the 2016 election with Putin - with Mueller investigating!

She may not understand that but I’m sure her lawyer handlers do.

Yes, they do. And as prosecutor Mitchell showed yesterday, quite subtly, those lawyers and handlers are in some jeopardy too.

It was obvious to me from Ford's testimony that she is extremely clueless about the legal ramifications she might face as well as the intrigue swirling around all of this under the surface. Her lawyers and handlers may try to coach and warn her about the former but they will continue to keep her in the dark about the latter.

The clock has started with the SENATE proceedings. The vote will happen next week as soon as the report is in.

I’m pessimistic that the Dems now have more time to come up with something else.

Exactly. I hope he gets on the court and never forgets who put him and his family thru the ringer. To put it mildly.

Flake = Mob Rule

Outside the law, Flake now bears the mark of Cain.

LIEberals best be careful what they are asking for!

I will guarandamtee you that if the FBI runs a full background investigation on Ms. Ford, she will not come out the folk hero the LIEberals claim she is.

The LIEberals have just unleashed a shit storm on themselves!

Flake did vote YES & the committee forwarded the confirmation to the entire Senate floor with a majority vote of 11 FOR BK.

This 1 week delay is supposed to be BETWEEN the committee vote & the full Senate vote.

It would by ironic if the investigators were to catch Ford in a process crime, like lying to the FBI.

Just desserts and sweet justice all in one package.

Flake could have moved it out of committee with a "yes" vote.

Yes, I know. Perhaps I should have been clearer.

I should have said, "Flake could have moved it out of committee with a "yes" vote, without the stipulation of an FBI investigation".

It does not matter about Flake. Murkowski and Collins would not vote yes for Kavanaugh unless there was an FBI background check.

I share your concern. I would love to see a fair, impartial investigation, and I’m really worried that it may not happen that way. If you believe in God, pray.

My point is that Flake didn’t do us any favors and he isn’t on our side.

This woman (who is either mentally ill, a HUGE phony or, perhaps, both) is under very substantial legal jeopardy from an honest and unafraid examination. She may not understand that but I’m sure her lawyer handlers do.

Scott Adams basically said the same thing, although there are potential pitfalls for both of them, she is under probably a greater risk.

That said, does the FBI have the balls to go after her, and "blame the victim?". The hysteria and moral panic we are in right now suggests to me not.
