The American Legion is demanding that President Donald Trump issue a proclamation honoring Sen. John McCains heroism, and order the nations flags to be flown at half-staff.
The nations largest veterans service organization urged Trump in a statement Monday to follow longtime protocol following the deaths of prominent government officials.
The group noted that Trump issued presidential proclamations commemorating the deaths of first lady Barbara Bush and pastor Billy Graham. McCain, who died Saturday at 81, is a decorated Vietnam War hero who spent more than five years as a prisoner-of-war and served in the Senate for six terms.

He realizes this is not a fight worth fighting.
It shall remain at full staff until such time as the Commander (me) determines that an event of significance has occurred that would warrant the lowering of the US Flag to half-staff.
The death of a RINO/POS is not an event of significance in the opinion of the Commander (me), therefore the US Flag that flies at Fort Home shall remain at full staff.
Life will continue as usual at Fort Home.
Agree.
Then he should have just gone with lowering on Saturday the whole time.
This is not good leadership. Makes him look like he can be manipulated. And his enemies will remember that.
Correct. . . And one that he cannot win regardless of what he does.
Seems to me that "Songbird" McLame forgot Article V. He may have needed remedial SERE training before doing sorties over VN.
I’m sure the last person he wants to fight over is Songbird. Plant him in the ground and move along.
Now he was a hero!
This is the real reason POTUS decided to lower the flag again ... not some manufactured outrage by the MSM.
Did the American Legion make the same demand for Jeremiah Denton?
This isn’t happening for JM, that is my point.
Does it matter. The bottom line is protocol was followed, and the AL should have been satisfied with that.
They have been a military AARP for a long time.
Another wing of the Swamp, with special hats.
I think folks know what kind of a situation he is in.
Yes, I would have liked him to stick with the previous decision, but the VFW wasn’t something he could ignore.
I see him as doing this in support of the military more than McCain.
Because that would be seen as a slap at the members of the VFW.
When you support the military, there are certain voices you need to take into consideration.
I stridently agree with Trump’s first move, but he didn’t want it to seem he disrespected the VFW, even if it was wrong.
And man, do I think it was wrong here.
To honor this man is terribly misguided.
Sometimes you have to bite the bullet. The bigger insult to me is John being planted at Arlington.
Now that is an insult.
Every now & then I accept when he gets something wrong. Overall he is a great leader.
Let's remember that he died 27 years after he left office. Heck -- I'll bet most Americans had never heard of him by the time he passed away.
Chief of Staff John Kelly would have gone out and lowered the flag himself if that's what it took.
