Ohio Special Election: Democrat Turnout 87% of 2016 Total — GOP Turnout Only 40% of 2016 Total
GP ^ | August 7,2018 | Jim Hoft

On Tuesday Troy Balderson defeated Democrat Danny O’Connor by less than 1% of the vote.

Balderson had 100,052 votes compared to Tiberi’s 251,266 votes in 2016 or 40% of the 2016 turnout.

Danny O’Connor had 98,364 votes on Tuesday compared to 112,638 votes received by Democrat Ed Albertson in 2016 or 87% of the 2016 Turnout.

This should concern Republican party leaders. The GOP to do a better job or Trump is going to face a Democrat Congress ready to impeach him in 2019.

Trump gets more support among Democrats and independents than anyone really wants to admit. He's also less popular in many of these swing states than you might think.

Trump won Ohio by almost nine points in 2016.

Sen. Rob Portman, who was targeted by Democrats as a vulnerable GOP incumbent going into 2016, refused to endorse Trump and won his race by 21 points.

I think people are confused with these numbers. The 87% is the number of the 2016 voters that turned out to vote in this election, not 87% of the eligible Dem voters. Similarly the 40% is of the 2016 totals that voted. So Dems got a much higher percent of their 2016 voters to the polls than Republicans did. This is fixable. If I were a Repub in this district I got a wake up call last night and would show up in November. I think close races like these are just what a complacent GOP needs to get out the vote. Not buying the blue wave. In my opinion they will win their traditionally held seats in Blue districts by large margins, but will have little effect on Trump held districts

The problem with that is even if disgusted by the GOPe in Congress, and they should be, frankly, the democrats, if in charge, are going to STOP the Trump agenda stone-cold dead. They will prevent the wall, and push amnesty with all their might.

Now personally, I can’t see Trump approving amnesty without a wall, so the bottom line is a democrat congress means no wall and no other achievements/wins on the Trump agenda.

That’s it. Game over.

We MIGHT win in back in 2020... But anyway that’s not engraved anywhere.

Trump is really all we have left, and if he loses, lights out for the Republic.

Overall, turnout was well below expectations: many were expecting 227,000 instead of 200,000.

As posted on another thread: GOPers in OH tell me their callers into the districts were finding that as late as Trump’s visit many Republicans there didn’t even know there was a special election!

No, there are only 3900 provisionals out, and O’Conner would need about 3/4 of those to win.

Not gonna happen.

I wonder if Balderson dampened enthusiasm a bit when he supposedly claimed he did not invite Trump to the campaign.

TOTALY disagree.

They will spend ALL their time on Committees attacking Trump.

They will do what Trey Gowdy could not.

Meanwhile, all the good work of Goodlattee, Nunces, Jim Jordan et al will be stopped.

The FBI will absolutely get a reprieve, and if Trump fires Rosenstein, Sessions and Mueller you will see impeachment hearings.

I’m sorry, but in no way would a Nancy Pelosi-led House be good for anything we believe in.

Doesn't look like a blue wave. I only say that because they threw everything at this - 3x as much money, ass-loads of angry ads, 87% turnout, Kasisch.. everything.

Still lost without the GOP even trying, despite us having a lousy RINO candidate and them having a (fake but) good candidate.

Saw your correction after I posted. I should’ve waited a minute to see if you’d correct yourself. I’ve been known to do that myself.

“To point the finger at this being an historic GOP district so therefore it should be easy for any GOP to win it, doesn’t square with the facts on the ground in this case.”

Very true! I agree with everything you posted. Sad to say, a lot of “repubicans” are “K-sick repubicans,” just like in AZ where evidently, “most repubicans” there are McCaniancs. So President Trump not only has to motivate people to vote out the RATs, he also has to do the same thing for the RINOs/GOPe! Because for him to continue without the wholehearted support of his own Party is just nuts. I continue to be just amazed at his level of energy and determination. He is wading in on absolutely everything that’s wrong, and doing so without his own party standing behind him. We have to break the hold that “big business” has on the GOPe. They don’t give a $hit about our country. It’s just a “big market” to them, and nothing else. I’d open a good bottle of wine and celebrate if I were to read that the Koch Bros. both died in a plane crash. Patriotism is out the window with these people.

“This was a waste of money for both sides...they have to run again in November”

NO! It was following the law regarding replacing a Congressman who resigned.
The real bad actor here wast Pat Tibiri, who bailed, rather than complete his term. And he did so for “a better job” with the Business Roundtable. Evidently Tibiri is the “kind of Republican” Ohioans like to elect. Someone “in the mold” of John KSick!

I put the problem on the RNC. Poor, poor, effort to GOTV. I put this square on Ronna Romney, who raises money but her ground game effort stink. It will come back to bite us. We need a more talented chair.
