The South China Sea is China’s primary sea route to India and the Middle East, and from there to Europe.

Note that the U.S. has for many years boxed China in from going to the east, because of U.S. presence in Korea, Japan, Taiwan and the Philippines. The South China sea is China’s main trade route.

China is looking back on the Japanese experience before WWII, where the U.S. restricted Japanese access to oil and other resources.

The Chinese don’t want the U.S. to have the ability to do something similar to them, which is why it is trying to control and claim sovereignty over portions of the South China Sea to be able to prevent the U.S. from cutting off its trade route. Of course, once that is secure that could lead to other things we wouldn’t want, such as increased pressure by China to take control of Taiwan.

It is time for these people to take care of themselves.

I can imagine that Israel could be a real asset working with the Chinese or the Russians.

why do I care what happens to Europe.

The Europeans don’t.

Look at them.

I suspect that the South China Sea thing is intended to cut our access to Asia and the Indian Ocean region.

Europe is another forward position.

That’s the main reason why you better care about Europe.

Is it really your position that nothing matters but the U. S.?

Free passage and allies around the world are important. We may not agree with them on everything, but with China in Europe, the Middle East, Africa, Asia, and eventually South America, what’s your take on who our allies remain to be at that time?

Who would we trade with. Who would we get strategic minerals and other raw materials from?

They day of the U. S. having any say on global dynamics would be over.

Surely you can’t think that would be good for the nation.

The ChiComs want to sharpen their urban fighting skills...We really need to isolate them from expanding their military. Sounds like another Far East nation some 80 years ago!

We are in Afghanistan. Why?
Because the Chinese are already there mining copper and REE’s under an agreement with the Taliban. The whole mini troop surge was to try to gain an entry into the REE’s by stopping the Chinese-Taliban alliance.

The Chinese were willing to help the Taliban with their Poppy fields.

Well, gee, the US is also guarding Poppy Fields in Afghanistan. Meanwhile, here at home, we hear, Opioid Crisis! out the wazoo. The Chinese already have the market on REE’s to include buying the only US REE mine in June of 2017 by a Chinese Consortium from it’s previous owner, also a Chinese Company.

Have you noticed who is buying water rights out West? The Saudi’s.
I would prefer the US safeguards it’s supplies of these things important to our future, instead of selling them off to those who will be holding them over our heads further in the future.

I wouldn’t argue about the water rights and other important things being sold off.

Those rights are sold only as long as they are not strategic. When the assets are needed, we revoke ownership.

There are things I don’t like. I’m not knowledgeable enough to address the water rights you’re addressing.

You keep telling me that China is “already there”, then seem to be saying that’s at least part of the reason why we should leave.

Great guy to read for info on China.

As I said above, China is very overextended right now.

I’m not convinced that Afghanistan would be better for the rest of the world, if the U. S. just pulled up stakes and left.

Would the Taliban be making more or less off these strategic mining operations if the U. S. weren’t there?

And the US could have all that destroyed in a minute. And China could do nothing but watch.

China’s OBOR has died because of US influence. Overextended China won’t let us, and others, wet their beaks.

China’s foreign policy is the most selfish and outlandish the world has possibly seen.

I am saying in the 21st century the old ways our country is utilizing, aka, bring them to their knees, bend them to our will, destroy them, convince Americans it is the best interest of America no longer works.

Maybe it is because we are a young Nation, we think in short term strategies. China does not. I think they look at the history of, say, Afghanistan, decide what assets benefit them now, and in the future, and what they possess that benefits Afghanistan.

The Chinese certainly have looked at the long term as far as the US is concerned. From providing the things we rely on in a digital world, from communication devices to solar panels, robotics..

Remember in 2012 when some Air Force service members deployed to Afghanistan were twice issued Chinese-made boots?
I think that kinda says it all.

China comes off looking like sages at times, but where would they be if we hadn’t gone all in with manufacturing?

They’d still have 1960s technology and a nation that hadn’t rebuilt in many ways.

The problem is, China thought it was going to see this income stream forever. It leveraged a lot to do what it has done, and now it’s exposed.

If we cut off trade with them, China can’t service it’s debt.

The U. S. would do fine.

I’m not as convinced as you are that China’s thinking has covered all it’s bases.
