U.S. says no need for better gas mileage, heavy vehicles safer

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Trump administration is citing safety to justify freezing gas mileage requirements.

A draft of a regulation prepared this summer would freeze an Obama-era program that was intended to improve fuel efficiency and cut pollution.

In excerpts obtained by The Associated Press, the administration argues that heavier vehicles are safer than lighter ones and that people would drive more — and be exposed to increased risk — if their cars get better mileage.

Transportation experts dispute the arguments. Automotive engineer Giorgio Rizzoni of Ohio State University calls the administration’s safety claims “a stretch.”

The draft also shows the administration plans to challenge California’s long-standing authority to enact its own, tougher pollution and fuel standards

There is no net safety increase with heavier vehicles. The safety advantage to the occupants of the heavier vehicle is offset by the disadvantage to the occupants of the smaller vehicle.

I wouldn’t mind more miles for the gas we use.

The price winds up in cars that cost more and perform differently. CVT transmissions are miserable, but wind up in many cars due to the extra 1-2 mpg they give. Full-sized, naturally aspirated engines are giving way to more expensive turbos that don't give you power from the start. Some folks don't like replacing steel with aluminum in their trucks. These are all coming NOT because of market demand (though the marketers spin as best they can, out of necessity) but because of these regs.

Really Giorgio??? A Stretch? Since the article doesn’t give us any information on why you think its a stretch... so let me propose this to you Mr. Rozzoni.

Lets strap you into the driver seat of a subcompact, with a 5 star crash rating... I will strap myself into a full size pickup with the lowest safety rating currently in production. We will then proceed to drive at each other at 35 MPH and head on collide.

I am game for this Mr Rozzoni... are you ?

I am still driving my 2003 1500 Ram Quad-Cab with the hemi and consistently get 13.5 MPG. I get real nervous when I have to ride in my friends Hyundai Elantra.

Also, get rid of the special blends that California has and watch the mileage go up.

Years one of our relatives lived in Portland, and we would drive from California up 5 or the semi coastal route to Oregon. All of the vehicles from an OJ Simpson Bronco to mid size vehicles barely made it to Oregon before needing to be filled up.

On the return trip, I would fill up in Oregon at the border.

Every vehicle without the ethanol and California crud got home with at least a quarter of a tank of gas. If I mixed that with California gas Crud, the mileage increased at least 10% with that tank.

In California we pay sales tax on the cost of gas. So the rectums who run California love higher gas costs as that brings in more sales tax $’s.

SORRY-—BUT YOU ARE WRONG. It is NOT a ‘stretch’ regarding safety.

I drive a 1976 Chevy 1 ton dually truck & a 1979 Buick station wagon.

They are made of STEEL !!!! REAL STEEL !!!

I just drove 60 miles R/T to go pay my property taxes at the county seat. Buick runs like a watch. No problems.

IF anyone gets into a tangle with me in one of those new plastic fantastic cars, I win. The law of Gross Tonnage is on my side.

Trump needs to know this. You are totally correct.

I have a car I have driven for 37 years & a truck I have driven for 32 years. Ethanol eats into my mileage.

I really don’t give a rat’s behind about the stupid people willing to gamble on their smaller, plastic vehicle. I am only interested in how I fare in a collision.

I drive a Chevy 1 ton dually truck 454 with 4 speed Granny low & a 1979 Buick station wagon.

Paid for, cheaper insurance, and lower registrations.

Not worn out yet, either, Truck has over 348,000 miles on it & I put over 250,000 of those miles on it. Car has 214,000 miles.

It isn’t what it does to gas mileage and your car, that crap destroys small engines!
