Burned-out millennials are quitting lucrative jobs

Sarah Solomon had a pretty sweet life. The 20-something publicist was always out at fashion events, dinners and parties — and even hung out with John Legend during Fashion Week.

“It was definitely New York glamourous — the black dress, leather pants and high heels, and an hour putting on my makeup,” says Solomon. “Anyone would think I had a really fun life, meeting cool people and celebrities.”

But she yearned for something more and resented only having two weeks of vacation a year. So, last August, she quit her seemingly great job at a plum downtown p.r. firm.

“I wanted to travel more — I didn’t want to have to ask for time off and grovel for extra days, you know?” says Solomon, now 25 and living in a rental house in Kauai, Hawaii, overlooking the beach.

Over the past 10 months, she’s scaled volcanoes in Guatemala, soaked up the waterfalls of Bali, Indonesia, and basked on glorious beaches halfway around the world. She gets by doing freelance p.r. work on the road, so long as she can get decent Wi-Fi in paradise.

living in a rental house in Kauai, Hawaii.

Freelance P.R. work does not cover that expense. Someone else is footing the bill.

And when she decides to have a kid, she’ll want a man with a real job to pay her bills. And if she get bored again and decides it’s time to go back to work, she’ll expect to be able to step into her old job but at the level she’d be had she never left. If her peers who stayed are VPs, she should be too.

I know millennials are annoying....but I like that article. I celebrate when someone can go over the wall and survive. More power to em. So long as they pay their own bills, I think it’s a good thing to leave the rat race behind every now and then....

Burnt out putting on heels and makeup............

I wonder what any WW II/Korea/Vietnam/Gulf Wars vets would think of that kind of “burn out?”

To get a job like that requires connections. To live in Hawaii and still do all that glorious travel requires the same.

Just another pampered baby. Rome v 2.0 is officially here.

I don’t think Millennials know what it’s like to really work. To not show up on time, but show up early. Turn your phone off and focus on the task at hand. To shoulder some extra work because it simply needs to be done. You’re not looking for praise, you’re just looking to get the job done right.

Kind of sad for them, actually. Missing out on the satisfaction of a job well done and knowing you truly earned your pay that day.

"We’re waiting for retirement at 67, and they keep bumping it up — who knows what age it will be for me — 70s? I thought it was foolish not to [leave]."

Interesting article and this guy brings up a good point. Many of these young people (I get to say that since my kids are this age) probably do see the whole social security thing spiraling out of control and no one doing anything about it. It gives a sense of helplessness to them.

I agree with many of them, go do what you want to do in life. You don't have to wait until you are old to do it!! My only fear is I think a lot of these people may be bored with a normal job and life because they have no spiritual balance and they are going off to try to find that. No one gets satisfaction out of just a job, you have to have something else. Whether its a family, community service, your church or all of the above (preferable).

She’s probably still making a good amount of money, to support her new lifestyle. Travel can be cheap, and it also, easily, be very much the opposite. Coupled with a beachfront rental...Gal must be swimming in it.

From her pic in the article, she’s got a good body with so-so face. She’ll be able to have a sugar daddy help with the bills til she’s 30.

sort of depends on how good you are. the world is different nowadays.

i know a millennial who worked as a freelance photographer for 2.5 years. worked her ass off, hustling business, getting amazing product out the door, everything. at the end of the 2.5 year period, she and her husband went to Europe for six months and lived very well. trip of a lifetime, she paid for it herself.

shocking, yes. but it is doable. but you gotta be good. sometimes being outside of a corporate structure unleashes that for some people.

Someone at Rotary the other day said that some significant percentage of Millenials, like 40%, were getting support from parents averaging $6800/yr.

LOL! Yes, many women in their 20’s have a lot of options to skip out on the Socialist master plan to double the tax base. :)
