David Edwards had no beef with the guy who killed him.
On March 1, 2017, Jordan Sharlow allegedly fired several bullets into the 31-year-old father of three at an east Madison gas station, reportedly confusing him with Riccardo Simms, the man he intended to kill.
Simms was gunned down five months later.
The murders of Edwards and Simms contributed to a grim milestone for Madison: 12 homicides in a single year, counting one in the town of Madison, a soon-to-be-annexed pocket on the city’s south side. That’s the most on record. Nine of those homicides were by gunfire, again a record, surpassing the six gun homicides in 2016.
It would be easy to write off Edwards’ death to random violence, to say it could have happened to anyone. But there was a big factor that increased Edward’s chances of falling victim to gunfire: He was a black man.
Of the 15 people killed by gunfire in a two-year spike starting in 2016, nine were black men. That’s 60 percent of the gun deaths in a city where blacks comprise just 7 percent of the population.

What’s the problem?
AA’s are responsible for 60.1% of all homicides in the US, but are only 12.6% of the population. Black males 14-35) represent <5% of the population, but commit the vast majority of the homicides. Evidently, the author never watches “The First 48.”
I believe I read a while back that if one removes black gun crime from US stats, we drop down do somewhere around 50th from the top in percentage of gun crimes. I’m sure my numbers or off, but I’m thinking not by much.
Another statistic the paper doesn’t mention is the percentage of the shooters who had felony convictions and we’re illegally in possession of the gun begin with.
I think your numbers are bang on. America doesn’t have a gun problem, it has a gang problem. Blacks and increasingly Latinos, with a few Asian and Eastern European gangs just to give it some diversity. The poor old Italian mobs can’t compete with the newbies.
Maybe, if just somehow, we could teach the 5% of the population could be taught to quit being feral animals, it might lower the murder rate. Personally, I pretty much quit caring. If they want to kill each other, just less blm types in the world to deal with.
“While the concealed carry law was billed by its Republican backers as a public safety measure, a study from the National Bureau of Economic Research suggests that right-to-carry laws lead to increases in violent crime by 13 percent to 15 percent within a decade of their adoption.” I have no doubt that Professor Lott could easily take apart this ridiculous assertion (and probably others in the article) and show it to be completely unfounded. Using that logic, Vermont must have always been a very violent place in which to live and that Texas (after passing such legislation in the mid 1990s) must have become even that more violent (even though it’s murder rate went down to levels not seen since the late 1950s).
Also, a few months ago, a friend on FB shared an article that discussed the Milwaukee Chief of Police comments on gun control and how he personally disliked Wisconsin’s concealed carry law. I replied back, saying such a source and their comments on gun control are rather suspect, given the Milwaukee police department’s not particularly proud history concerning the Bambi Bembenek affair and also what was revealed during the investigation of Jeffrey Dahmer’s serial butchering of young men.
So maybe black folks should get together and decide not to kill EACH OTHER!
The true disparity, in some urban areas, is unfortunately the numbers of “black” men getting shot by “black” men and how those numbers far exceed the portion of “blacks” in the general population. Yes, we have to say it: black on black crime is a major fact, and blaming it as some sort disparity with sources unknown and not understood is just a pretense avoiding the facts.
Is this because they all look alike?
Blacks are the single largest group of murder victims, Latinos (who are grouped with whites, for statistical purposes) are the 2nd largest victim group.
