GOP candidate: Civil war wasn’t about slavery
The Hill ^ | June 25th, 2018 | Lisa Hagen

Posted on 06/25/2018 3:28:41 PM PDT by Mariner

Republican Senate nominee Corey Stewart said that he doesn’t believe that the Civil War was fought over the issue of slavery, arguing that it was mostly about states’ rights.

In a Monday interview with Hill.TV’s “Rising,” Stewart, who recently won the GOP nomination in the Virginia Senate race, said that not all parts of Virginia’s history are “pretty.”

But he said he doesn’t associate slavery with the war.

“I don’t at all. If you look at the history, that’s not what it meant at all, and I don’t believe that the Civil War was ultimately fought over the issue of slavery,” Stewart said.

When “Rising” co-host Krystal Ball pressed him again if the Civil War was “significantly” fought over slavery, Stewart said some of them talked about slavery, but added that most soldiers never owned slaves and “they didn’t fight to preserve the institution of slavery.”

“We have to put ourselves in the shoes of the people who were fighting at that time and from their perspective, they saw it as a federal intrusion of the state,” he said.

Stewart also said he doesn’t support a Richmond elementary school named after a Confederate general deciding to rename it after former President Obama.

“Making up quotes? I never made that statement.”

You are right and I was wrong. I apologize for misdirecting my statement to you. It should have gone elsewhere.

I will give myself a 12-hour time-out.

No, he didn’t.

Lincoln most certainly did have the Maryland officials arrested. He sent 1000 troops to occupy Federal Hill, thereby enslaving Baltimore, had the mayor and other officials arrested and held without charge, suspended Habeus Corpus, and effectively enslaved the people of Maryland. Maryland was a slave state and a border state and Washington D.C. was built on Maryland soil.

I just read that and your right, not one mention of slavery. However, I decided to look up the causes of complaint it mentions. In that I counted slavery, slaveholders, etc., being used 24 times. Now my eyes aren’t as good as they used to be but could you be a dear and google “resolutions passed by the convention of the peoples of Arkansas 20 March 1861” and check my count? I would put a link here but I don’t know how to link in html. Thanks!

Your story is changing and it isn't getting any more accurate.

“Unforced error...against Tiny Tim Kaine no less. “

Tim Kaine is certain to win.

Won’t even be close.

Stewart showed himself not smart enough to be a Senator...and Kaine is one of the stupidest people walking today.

“The most conservative men I know from the World War II generation have almost to a man told me that they believe the Civil War had little to do with slavery”

Apparently they knew nothing about US History.

Stewart is a fool. I know him. Challenge here on FR is that there are a lot of unreconstructed Dixiecrats here that wrap themselves in the conferate flag, racism, and hate. Bet some of the older ones were in KKK at at some point. Sad the Republican Party let them in once they become unwelcome as Democrats.

“Corey would be a great senator”

He will never be a US Senator.

He has shown himself too stupid for it.

Rings a bell. Look up Davis' address to the Confederate Congress on April 29, 1861.

Yes, I was kind of hoping Laura Ingram was gonna run against him, but I understand the reasons she didn't.

Why did the north invade the south?

A) to preserve the union

B) to end slavery

We live in such silly times, when I was a kid everyone knew

Why did the south Secede?

A) To preserve Slavery

B) To preserve Slavery under the guise of States Rights?

To answer your question, the North “invaded” the South to preserve the Union and assert it’s laws and authority over rebel governments.

The south bashers here for decades now in various incarnations do the “who me?” mad magazine pose when confronted with monument removal as it now expands into Indian and Founders territory beyond just the CSA

I was just in Santa Fe late last night at one of the old Cathedrals off the plaza looking at the monuments to the Spaniards who conquered and proselytizer the Publeoans

I wondered when will those come down too

We are without question headed for another conflict

Minority politicians calling for physical attacks on the opposition and their families

The left calling the women in the presidents family cnuts and with little repercussion

And yet so called righties on this very forum stay fixated on slavery from 158 years ago

As does the left
