Ex-NFL player asks Trump to release nephew convicted of murder

A running back who played for several NFL teams is publicly requesting that President Trump consider a clemency request for his nephew, stepping forward to seek Trump's help after the president has battled the NFL in particular about protests during the national anthem.

Trump said Friday that he hadn’t heard from any athletes, a week after he invited them to submit names of prisoners treated unjustly by the legal system. Apparently unknown to Trump, former NFL player Tony Paige sent a letter last week requesting clemency for his nephew Marcus Paige, who is serving a 25-year sentence for second-degree murder.

Paige, a former player for the Miami Dolphins, New York Jets, and Detroit Lions, works as an NFL agent based in Maryland, and said he felt obligated to write the letter.

I was under the impression that the president wanted to hear from players who knew someone UNFAIRLY prosecuted. If this person is guilty of the murder then it’s hardly unfair to be imprisoned.

Did you ever see a news story like this in the paper? Every now and then you run into a story, says, "Some guy broke into a house, stole a lot of things, and while he was in there, he raped an 81 year old woman." And I'm thinking to myself, "Why!? What the ____ kind of a social life does this guy have?" I want to say, "Why did you do that!?" "Well, she was coming on to me. We were dancing and I got horny. When Trump looks at it and says "whoa, I meant people who were railroaded, not killers" the media will say "see, he never meant it when he asked athletes to refer cases to him. Just another Trump lie." Bet on it.
