Ron Howard sparks political debate by asking Twitter 'When was America at its greatest?'

Ron Howard has one question on his mind, and it has nothing to with his latest film, “Solo: A Star Wars Story.”

“Honest question to #MAGA minders,” the 64-year-old tweeted Thursday. “When was America at its greatest? Can you tell me an era that reflects the ‘Again’ that you hope to return to?”

The Oscar-winning filmmaker and former “Happy Days” actor quickly started a conversation with users who had different opinions of President Trump’s famous slogan.

You are making the mistake of adopting tactics that assume the Left has a valid argument, when they adopt Misdirection: Familiar Leftist Tactic, on racial questions.

The causes of the problems in the Black community have been deliberately misrepresented, by Leftwing whites, in a manner that prevents actual solution.

You also, I think, are confusing "Civil Rights," and "Civil Liberties." The first are rights conferred by over-reaching Government. The latter are the Natural Rights, recognized in the Declaration of Independence. (Declaration Of Independence--With Study Guide)

I saw that, but the resolution is superior.

Free Parking is way underrated as one of the reasons America became Great.

I don’t intend to pursue this — I think the Internet goes downhill when someone (like me) insists on arguing endlessly until they “win”. I don’t feel that I need to “win” this point.

I will say this: You both are making good points. Strictly speaking, I think you are Right on this matter.

But I wonder —

Do you realize that the great mass of undecided voters don’t care about your nuanced and logical and correct explication on this matter? The man in the street isn’t listening to you and does not realize how correct you are.

The man in the street believes that the GOP is the party of the racists. He knows this “fact” because the media tells him it is so. And Ron Howard would agree. That whole Trump MAGA thing? Well, the man in the street is told that this is a racist dog whistle.

Your well constructed argument is not persuasive to the man in the street in the times in which we live.

I do understand why you disagree with my point, but I will gently say again that if we seek to persuade people that the GOP is NOT the party of the racists then perhaps reminding them that the 1964 Civil Rights Act (which meant so much to Martin Luther King) was only passed because the Republicans supported it over Democrat opposition.

As a point of persuasion that Trump is not the leader of a racist political party, I think this has some merit in today’s political climate. And politics is really about persuasion.

I would also add that activists like Ron Howard ask loaded questions like “When was America great?” because he’s hoping — really, really hoping — that some lamebrain Republican will pick some year which just happens to fall in the time period was slavery was legal, or Jim Crow was in force or Blacks were kept off voting rolls in some states. Just pick a year like “1950” and he’s ready to pounce all over that, you dirty racist!!

If you highlight a major piece of civil rights legislation which the GOP supported and which the Democrats did not support, then — as a tool of political persuasion for the man in the street in 2018 — I think it’s not the worst argument.

But, again, I grant you — for the true political aficionado, you really are more correct than I am. I do see that.

I appreciate where you are coming from. I recognize the problem that you address with respect to contemporary public perception & attitudes, and do address many aspects at my Conservative resource center. It is certainly not my intention to ignore the PR problem to which you direct attention.

Based on what I’ve been told by those that lived it and what I’ve seen, yep, the 50s was it.

I’d expand it out to include 1945 to1965. That 20 year period was the pinnacle of the pinnacle.

And then the fall began. Just look at 1967, the decline was in full swing.

There was a reprieve, a plateauing, during the 1980s, but it’s been just getting worse and worse since then.

No. The 1940s to 1960s were not a good time for black people.

America became great when the Civil Rights Act was in place. Black people are Americans too and they needed the right to be part of American society.

It is the far-left-wing mentality that is holding black people back in America.

Until the 1960s, Blacks had overwhelmingly intact families with two-parent households and low illegitimacy rates. They also had good schools and valued an education. They had also not been politically radicalized to the left.

Fast forward after the CR acts were passed by the 1970s and Great Society and the welfare state, they became an utter and complete basketcase and have NEVER recovered from said destructive policies that utterly ruined the Black family unit.

Black illegitimacy wasn’t a problem before the late 60’s? I didn’t know that.

As late as 1968, the Supremes could have a Motown hit called ‘Love Child’. The whole concept doesn’t make sense in today’s culture.

I believe the Black illegitimacy rate was 27% in the early ‘60s. Now, that was fairly high — but very, very low compared to the nearly 75% it is today. 3 out of 4 Black children were born to intact families. If the illegitimacy rate fell to early ‘60s levels, the crime rate in the Black community would plummet.

I haven’t seen the figures lately, but I believe the White illegitimacy rate today is about where it was with Blacks 55 years ago. If it ever rose to match Black illegitimacy, we would have a complete societal breakdown.

When it shifted in less than 20 years from a shameful embarrassment to a badge of honor is where it all went terribly wrong.

“...When was America at its greatest?’,...”

Gee, let’s see...

Maybe back before liberals convinced women it was OK to murder their unborn children, for a start...

Maybe back before the democrats allowed the floodgates to open and let in completely alien cultures bent on sucking our system dry...

Maybe back before the democrat party became complete and total communist assbags...

Shall I go on...?

It was at it’s greatest when the greatest generation came home and were able to spoil their kids.
Then a whole lot of those spoiled kids went on to allow the usurpation of our country by communistic type ideology and satanic self worship.

MAGA is NOT, I repeat NOT about any particular date, but rather returning the pursuit of our liberty-loving founding principles that throughout our history have led to us becoming a more prosperous, just, and compassionate society, regardless of whatever injustices or other sufferings or evils had not yet been overcome.

Exactly. It's not measured on a calendar but in attitudes and culture.

This IS a trick question. It’s not a “when” was America great. It’s “what” makes America great. And “what” made America great was God, family and capitalism. Bring those back and America IS GREAT AGAIN.
