President Trump said he likely will support a congressional effort to end the federal ban on marijuana, a major step that would reshape the pot industry and end the threat of a Justice Department crackdown.
Trumps remarks put him sharply at odds with Atty. Gen. Jeff Sessions on the issue. The bill in question, pushed by a bipartisan coalition, would allow states to go forward with legalization unencumbered by threats of federal prosecution.
Trump made his comments to a gaggle of reporters Friday morning just before he boarded a helicopter on his way to the G-7 summit in Canada. His remarks came the day after the bipartisan group of lawmakers proposed their measure.
One of the lead sponsors is Sen. Cory Gardner (R-Colo.), who is aligned with Trump on several issues but recently has tangled with the administration over the Justice Departments threatened crackdowns on marijuana.
I support Sen. Gardner, Trump said when asked about the bill. I know exactly what hes doing. Were looking at it. But I probably will end up supporting that, yes.

I respect your response, but I believe that criminalizing pot is barking up the wrong tree.
I have seen the very same things you have seen and more. Having at one time lived in a major US city and saw the whole freak show.
The real battle is a spiritual/cultural war. That is where the real fight should be — not in the area of criminalizing pot.
IMHO, criminalizing pot has the unintended effect of encouraging the rebellious desires many have — it allows them to be “rebels.” Take that away and the whole pot culture of “rebels” begin to fade.
Sometimes it is better to let them be free have at it and they learn their hard lessons. Thus, they freely choose to walk away.
If you really want to help the family with kids deep into pot culture, I would recommend trying to get as many people (if possible kids included) to pray all of the Psalms.
Many very powerful spiritual effects! Psalms are spiritual battle prayers par excellence.
To me this is how you win the real battles. Criminalizing pot only moves the deck chairs...
How does that make a lick of sense?
Ha Ha, take that, Traitor Jeff! Take it and go away!

Me, too. I’m so disgusted with Florida’s gov’t making it as difficult as possible to bring to fruition the FL amendment which was passed in 2011. Even that amendment is ridiculously prohibitive. You have to be practically dying, and only with a limited number of conditions to be “allowed” to use it. And even then, these sanctimonious scums still delay and obstruct what was passed as law in 2011.
So many old and sick Floridians in pain, who didn’t want to take Big Pharma’s poison pills, continue to needlessly suffer.
I will vote for whoever willingly supports making it a reality in this state, regardless of their other stances. It would be very difficult to pull the lever for a lib, but I am that disgusted.
Wake up, Republicans, or you deserve to lose.
Thank you so much for that reminder Frank. You are very thoughtful. We have been praying a lot for these kids. (I love the Psalms as well.:)) It is heartbreaking to watch them jumping into the abyss. Their other choices in life have taken a dramatic downturn in a very short period of since they started using and in their quest for their next high. It is like they are checking out of life. They are driving off every descent person that have surrounded them for years. And you can’t reason with them when they are stoned.
I’m passionate about this because I believe there isn’t one benefit to legalizing it. We will just disagree on the legalization aspect because I strongly believe it takes the stigma off using an incredibly harmful chemical compound (THC), legitimizes it and is further destroying the fabric of American society.
One of the reasons I love FR so much is that we are able to come on and debate these things. Like a giant think tank.
Cars can be very harmful, once introduced in society there has been a spike in traffic deaths so should we ban cars?
The internet can be very addicting too, should we ban that?
Sex can have unwanted consequences, should we ban that?
Too much sugar and candy can kill you too, ban that?
But the problem with comparing weed with some of those other things is that it is a foreign and toxic chemical substance that doesn't elevate society in any way, and actually makes it worse.
Like alcohol and tobacco?
That isnt what is being debated here.:)
Neither were cars, the internet, sex, or candy. But after observing that marijuana has potential harms, you had no objection to drawing a distinction between those other potentially harmful things and marijuana. So why do you object to being called on to draw a distinction between marijuana and other foreign and toxic chemical substances that don't elevate society in any way, and actually make it worse?
Stop looking at it as a drug problem, instead treat it as a spiritual problem — it is the true hole in their hearts that is being filled by bad stuff.
Replace that bad stuff with the light and power of God.
God Bless!
Of course...I’m reading in trade magazines that one of the biggest hurdles to hiring is finding applicants that can pass a drug test.
But only the new ones huh? Well that explains a lot.
Not going to happen....My Pain management Doc sent me to a Doctor who specializes in treating chronic pain with Marijuana.
Have been on RX opioids for years. First office visit is $250 plus $75 for license then $125 every 70 days for renewal. That is before any product. Weed on the street is $280 a Z for great bud. 4 months supply. Numbers and all that......
Oh no. I’m just proposing we not legalize something currently illegal.
Most of those conservatives know who pays for the Idle dopers.
Make your case.
Very broad statement. Make your case.
No they haven't, they just voted to ignore Federal law, they didn't change the law.
Its unconstitutional. And hypocritical. Im with the Prez.
Yes I vote.
Let us hope so. It's been a colossal failure.
This is an issue best left to the states and to the people.
