We are discussing the argument that marijuana should be illegal because it is a foreign and toxic chemical substance that doesn't elevate society in any way, and actually makes it worse. To see if that "because" is valid logic, we need to look at other foreign and toxic chemical substances that don't elevate society in any way, and actually makes it worse - otherwise your argument is no more valid than the counterargument "Marijuana should be legal because it's a plant."
