A federal judge granted a restraining order Thursday forcing prison guards in Alaska to stop giving Muslim inmates pork as they break their fasts during Ramadan, rights campaigners said.
The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) filed a lawsuit on Tuesday claiming Anchorage Correctional Complex had violated constitutional prohibitions against "cruel and unusual punishment."
CAIR said the US District Court for Alaska had granted its request for an emergency temporary order requiring guards to provide adequate meals in accordance with government health guidelines.
"CAIR has reported an unprecedented spike in bigotry targeting American Muslims and members of other minority groups since the election of Donald Trump as president," the Washington-based organization said in a statement.
Muslims are currently marking the holy month of Ramadan, fasting from dawn until sunset, which means going without food for around 18 hours in Anchorage.
Inmates observing the festival are given rations equating to 1,100 calories a day at most, according to the complaint, far short of the recommended daily amount of around 2,500 calories for men.
The packages contain food made of pork, which is forbidden in Islam, rendering the actual nutritional value of the meals even more inadequate.
CAIR said the treatment contravened the Religious Land Use and Institutionalized Persons Act and violated First and 14th Amendment rights to equal protection and free exercise of religion.
The suit seeks a "balanced nutritional diet" for inmates, as well as policy changes and compensatory and punitive damages.
The Alaska corrections department did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
Ramadan began on May 16 in the United States and will end on or around June 1

Are there prisons in Muslim countries?
Send them home to their Muslim Krapistans now!!!
It’s absurd that this could be construed as cruel and unusual punishment.
funny...... Muslims refusing to eat their own
That’s terrible!
Better to be beheaded or thrown from a tall building or set on fire than to forced to eat bacon.
The tragedy is that a perfectly good pig died to feed these vermin.
Need to get the ACLU on this.
Separation of church and state and all that.
I guess I could add a /s.
Boo frick’n Hoo!
Bacon is good for you. Smoked baby backs... sausages.... its all good man.
Pork’em Danno!
Exactly the reason I consume pork on a regular basis - to p*ss off the Muslims.
Their overly fastidious attachment to halal dietary restrictions belies the original reason. Based not on purity of the food consumed, but a bizarre hodgepodge of superstitious fears, this is a way of assigning a subhuman status to those who do not or will not comply with these arbitrary rules.
There was once a very real reason to avoid pork as sustenance, but that had to do with lack ofrefrigeration, or at least periods of cool to cold weather, and infestations of trichinosis, from failure to properly cook pork
Pork ribs with Jack Daniel barbecue sauce has to be just wrong under halal rules for so many reasons. Makes it all the more fit for me.
Separation of church and state, right, Lefties???
I do not believe this!
Why in the hell would the state of Alaska do this knowing it would get them in trouble. They have a lot of Salmon and Caribou to feed them, goat and sheep are in short supply in Alaska. If they really did this it was just stupid.
If this old man is ever imprisoned in Alaska I shall say that my religion only allows me to eat only Sockeye
Salmon, smoked, broiled, and raw ceviche salmon. If such was in short supply I could be compelled to eat rare rib eye steak.
They must not have gotten Orotten’s memo. The federal prison system is no longer allowed to serve bacon. The reason? When they polled prisoners, they found they didn’t care for pork, especially bacon. Evidently, the prison in Anchorage must be a state facility. And they must not have polled THEIR prisoners. I understand there are some people who avoid certain foods, in the practice of their religion, but I always wondered why their religion didn’t also outlaw CRIME. Ah, well, just one of life’s little mysteries, I guess.
“Wonder how they treat non-Muslims that are in prison Muslim countries. Odds are they dont even MAKE it to prison.”
Actually, I have some second hand experience on that from a Dutch program manager. Each week one of his jobs was to go around to every prison and see if any of his hundreds of workers had been arrested. There is no process whereby they get charged and tried and have a chance at a lawyer, at least not in Saudi Arabia. The cop who arrests them takes them to a prison and that’s it. (If there’s a trial or defense possible, he didn’t say.)
In Saudi Arabia, if a prisoner’s family does not feed him, he starves or he takes the food from other prisoners. So, to see that his workers didn’t starve he’d have to supply their food. But to make sure they got it he had to feed every prisoner in the prison, lest they just beat up the prisoner and take his food. The Saudis would portion out his men to different prisons so his company would have to feed all the prisoners in all the prisons.
Could snails, fish guts, shark poop, be subs?
Don’t want to eat pork? Stay out of prison.
It’s what was on the menu. They could have not eaten.
