If, as expected, Mitt Romney wins his race for a Senate seat from Utah he may become the most powerful man in the United States Senate. As many of us remember, Romney, former Governor of Massachusetts, ran for president in 2012 and lost to Barack Obama. It wasn’t one of those totally humiliating losses—the map did not turn blue—but we assumed Mitt Romney would fade into history.
Well, maybe not.
The seat will remain Republican-held for President Trump come January of 2019, but this one could very well turn out to be the swing vote in the Senate. If Democrats pick up one seat, not two, the Senate will be tied and Trump will have to continue to rely on Vice President Pence to cast tie-breaking votes, unless other Republicans defect. In that scenario Romney, a frequent critic of President Trump’s, could easily upset the balance of power.
The reason? Republican Senator Romney will have what no other Republican Senator currently has, a Republican constituency that does not like President Trump. Trump came in third in the Republican primary in Utah in 2016 and in the general election a large number of voters voted for the independent and Mormon conservative Evan McMullin, rather than pull the lever for Trump or Hillary. For comparison, in 2016 Donald Trump won about 45 percent of the general election vote in Utah; in 2012, Romney won about 73 percent of the presidential vote there. Mormon voters, who make up the majority of voters in Utah, are perhaps the only conservative religious bloc in the country who are bothered by President Trump’s many infidelities and dubious business practices—Trump’s approval among Mormons trails behind white evangelicals by 14 points.

"Dubious business practices" was a charge leveled at then Presidential Candidate Romney by the scumbag left and I thought it was BS. Nothing Donald Trump did as a civilian comes close to the felonies and treason of Secretary of State Clinton, First Lady and as a scumbag lawyer.

The mask got ripped off of Romney when he did his speech on Trump and demonstrated for all that he is a nasty, little man. When he ran(?) against Obama, he showed he was not a fighter and a coward. I think Romney’s day in the sun, if he ever had one, has come and gone. One last thing - Trump is God’s man and I firmly believe that is why he overcame all obstacles, some of which are just coming to light. Mitt is not in the same category.

When he was running for president, the Mormons I know were sure he was going to win, and that it would be a fulfillment of some Mormon prophecy.
They want to convert everybody. We’d have a better world if we Christians were as energetic in proselytizing as Mormons are.
That's foolish, Manchin loses and Casey loses that's two more R's King in Maine stands a good chance of losing, that's three, Log Cabin Romney is insignificant and the President will make him even more so.

Do these morons think time just stopped in Utah? That Utah Mormon's hold the same view of the President they did of candidate Trump? Before the election neverTrumpers could paint Trump as reckless, unstable and not conservative. Trump has put the lie to that already, and I suspect most of those same voters now approve of his job performance. What will another six years of winning do? They may well elect Bishop Romney, but I don't think they will be happy if he blocks Trump's agenda. Certainly the bulk of the GOP voters nationwide won't be.
