Come home! Come home! The last post is sounding
for you to hear. All good soldiers know very well there
is nothing to fear while they do what is right, and forget
all the worries they have met in their duties through the
year. A soldier cannot always be great, but he can be a
gentleman and he can be a right good pal to his comrades in
his squad. So all you soldiers listen to this - Deal fair by all
and you’ll never be amiss.

Canteen Mission Statement

Showing support and boosting the morale of
our military and our allies military
and the family members of the above.
Honoring those who have served before.

ANZAC War Memorial, Sydney, Australia

Anzac Day is commemorated by Australia and New Zealand on 25 April every year to remember members of the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps (ANZAC) who landed at Gallipoli in Turkey during World War I. Anzac Day is also observed in the Cook Islands, Niue, and Tonga. It is no longer observed as a national holiday in Samoa.

Anzac Day marks the anniversary of the first major military action fought by Australian and New Zealand forces during the First World War. The acronym ANZAC stands for Australian and New Zealand Army Corps, whose soldiers were known as Anzacs. The pride they took in that name endures to this day, and Anzac Day remains one of the most important national occasions of both Australia and New Zealand.

When war broke out in 1914, Australia had been a Federal Commonwealth for only thirteen years. In 1915, Australian and New Zealand soldiers formed part of an Allied expedition that set out to capture the Gallipoli Peninsula to open the way to the Black Sea for the Allied navies. The plan was to capture Istanbul, capital of the Ottoman Empire and an ally of Germany. The ANZAC force landed at Gallipoli on 25 April, meeting fierce resistance from the Turkish defenders. What had been planned as a bold strike to knock Turkey out of the war quickly became a stale-mate, and the campaign dragged on for eight months. At the end of 1915, the Allied forces were evacuated after both sides had suffered heavy casualties and endured great hardships. Over 8,000 Australian and 2,700 New Zealand soldiers died. News of the landing at Gallipoli made a profound impact on Australians and New Zealanders at home and 25 April quickly became the day on which they remembered the sacrifice of those who had died in war.

Though the Gallipoli campaign failed in its military objectives of capturing Istanbul and knocking Turkey out of the war, the Australian and New Zealand troops' actions during the campaign bequeathed an intangible but powerful legacy. The creation of what became known as an "Anzac legend" became an important part of the national identity in both countries. This shaped the ways they viewed both their past and their future.

Australian poet Banjo Paterson wrote the words to "Waltzing Matilda" in January 1895 while staying at Dagworth Station, a sheep and cattle station near Winton in Central West Queensland owned by the Macpherson family. The words were written to a tune played on a zither or autoharp by 31‑year‑old Christina Macpherson, one of the family members at the station.

Australians all let us rejoice,
For we are young and free;
We’ve golden soil and wealth for toil;
Our home is girt by sea;
Our land abounds in nature’s gifts
Of beauty rich and rare;
In history’s page, let every stage
Advance Australia Fair.

In joyful strains then let us sing,
Advance Australia Fair.

Beneath our radiant Southern Cross
We’ll toil with hearts and hands;
To make this Commonwealth of ours
Renowned of all the lands;
For those who’ve come across the seas
We’ve boundless plains to share;
With courage let us all combine
To Advance Australia Fair.

In joyful strains then let us sing,
Advance Australia Fair.

From “The Band Played Waltzing Matilda”, an anti war song by Eric Bogle, the final verse:

Now every April I sit on my porch
and watch the parade pass before me,
I see my old comrades how proudly they march
renewing their days of past glory;
I see the old men, so tired, stiff and sore
the weary old heroes of a forgotten war
and the young people ask “What are they marchin’ for?”
And I ask myself the same question.

And the band plays Waltzing Matilda
as the old men still answer the call,
but year after year their numbers get fewer,
some day on one will march there at all.

Waltzing Matilda, Waltzing Matilda,
who’ll come a’ Waltzing Matilda with me?
Their ghosts can be heard as you pass beside the billabong,
who’ll come a’ Waltzing Matilda with me?

I have Waltzing Matilda on my rather huge playlist. I’ll queue it up today. Anzac was huge to Australians. The Australian Mint did a series of silver coins and medals for the centenary that was really quite beautiful.

Howdy, beachie.

Hope you’re having a grand day and enjoying your freedom a bit. :-) Did you get out to enjoy the day since it isn’t raining?

No getting out here! My lil hiney is staying inside where it’s dry and warm. Wet, wet, wet and right nippy here today.

Easy to see and understand Anzac being huge to Australians.
They’ve gone all out to honor those who fought and died with monuments and memorials across the country. Just beautiful, large and small.

I just looked them up and VERY nice centenary coins and medals the Australian Mint created.

Wish we could break your boredom by sending some of this dratted rain to you!! LOL! I’m glad I don’t have to go anywhere today because it’s just ugly.

Wouldn’t be quite so bad if a thunderstorm would rumble through to break the monotony. LOL

It would be wonderful if you could. We’re [that is, hubby] watering again. More money poured into the ground so we can have a decent lawn.

Sorry you didn’t get a lightning show out of the rain. You could have gotten some cool pictures!

See ya later. Somehow I hurt my back, too....lord knows how...and I took some lortab which makes me groggy. Couldn’t sleep, though, so I rested flat on my back. It’s a bit better.

Dang if I don’t think a sandstorm just blew in from the south. The sky is all ugly tan right now. I hope I am wrong. Who needs the aggravation!

Yuck! I hope the dust storm didn’t last long! No fun!

No dust blowing around here for a while. There are puddles and rivulets all over the place this evening. It’s a swamp out there.

But the rain has finally moved on and we’re in the clear for the next week. YAY!!

It would be nice to know how you hurt your back so you don’t do it again. I hope it’s feeling better by now.

The wind is still blowing from the north, but at least it’s dark so I don’t have to SEE whether the dirt is still in the air. Blech!

I just took another 1/2 lortab, so if I disappear, it’s because I zonked out. LOL! I wish I knew what caused it. I woke up that way, so it might be that I slept hard in a bad position.

Glad your rain is gone! You’ve had to much and we’ve had none. Why can’t there be a balance! :) Did you get your housework all done?

I got my new tires today. Buy 3 and get 1 for $1 and they were still over $600!! Hard pill to swallow! Thank goodness when I bought the car I got oil changes for life because this car uses synthetic and I always keep my cars till the wheels fall off. LOL I DO get my money’s worth for that deal.

Just don’t step outside! LOL! If there’s still wind, there’s probably still dust in the air. gack!

Sometimes it just takes a tiny wrong move to throw things out of whack. Maybe you rolled over in your sleep in a way that made a muscle spasm or something. It can happen.

Get all the housework done? NEVER! LOL! But I got several things done so it’s good.

OUCH on the tires. That’s always a painful experience, isn’t it? At least you won’t have to bear that pain again for a while.

Oh, never fear...I shut the door when the sky turned brown. Well, I did go feed Ghost, but that only took a half a minute!

The funniest thing happened today. Peaches and I were trying to nap, and we heard a squabble close by. I thought it was outside underneath the bedroom window, but Peaches ran to the door and wanted out NOW! I opened the bedroom door and saw Ginger all puffed up and yowling, peeked out and saw the little black kitty running down the hall.

Seems my hubby went out of the garage to repair his tire and left the door up. Black kitty just couldn’t resist sneaking in, but Ginger caught her. LOL! Peaches was more upset, because he didn’t see her...he just smelled “other kitty” in the hall. So, I got up. Sleep was out of the question.

Glad you got some things done. I need to do that. Next week. I’m going to baby my back over the weekend. I think it feels better, but I haven’t moved much since turning on the laptop.

ROTFL!! Can’t leave the door open when there are kittehs wandering around outside. The little black kitteh might not try that again, though, after her confrontation with Ginger.
But darn the timing and ruining your nap.

Just did easy stuff today since I don’t want to chance cranking up the ol’ back again. It was a long week and a half of pain after hauling Dexter’s big butt to the vet. He’s a whole lotta cat!
Still doing a little .... laundry going at the moment.

Yes, taking it easy the next few days sounds like a good idea. I hope it works and your back feels good again and stays that way.

I’m glad it was her instead of Ghost...the fight might have really taken an ugly turn. He tried to come in once before and Peaches lashed out like I’ve never seen him do before or since!

I hope your back is better soon, too. Lugging that fat cat was tough! But worth it to get him all fixed up! Did my laundry yesterday...just wish it’d fold itself. LOL!

Is it still raining? I checked DH and It’s nice there. Ooooo....they got the IR cam installed at the GHO nest in Montana. Good job!

I thought about what might have happened if it had been Ghost who slipped in. Ooooooh my! LOL! I reckon he took the hint and won’t try that again, and maybe the little black kitty will do the same.

My back does feel better and that’s why I’ve done easy stuff today. It would be nice to KEEP it feeling better.

It stopped raining here around 6:00 or so and the sun even peeked out for a minute before clouds moved back in. We got a lot more rain down here today than they did up at DH. Ended up with 1.3 an inch.

I noticed the IR at Montana last night and meant to let you know, then got sidetracked and forgot. It’s nice to be able to see those lil cuties at night when they’re awake. I just wish they weren’t living in a magpie nest so they’d have room to move around a little.
