Calexit plan to divorce California from US is getting a second chance

California's secession movement will get a second try as the state's "war" against the Trump administration rages on several fronts.

On Monday, the California Secretary of State's Office announced that a secession ballot proposal has been cleared to begin gathering needed signatures. It comes amid other efforts that seek to split up California

"Calexit is left — we are progressive, and that's why we don't like Trump," said Marcus Ruiz Evans, one of the leaders of the Yes California campaign seeking California independence. "But there are some very hardcore Republican concepts to Calexit, including the group saying don't waste our tax money."

Evans said the group's membership has risen by "about four times" to roughly 44,000 members since the election of President Donald Trump

A similar effort by the backers of Calexit failed last year after negative fallout emerged following the disclosure that its leader, Louis J. Marinelli, was living in Russia. Marinelli, who is still listed as one of the backers of the measure, said in an interview he "travels to Russia and has worked there from time to time but is still a resident of California."

If the current Calexit measure gets enough signatures to qualify, it would result in a special election in 2021 to ask California voters whether the state should become an independent country. The backers need almost 366,000 signatures of registered voters to qualify it for the ballot.

I like the idea of the State of Jefferson. We saw the signed when traveling south through northern California.

California actually tried to split itself with the Pico Act in 1859, but the US Congress never voted on it.

I am so sad this will never happen. The Democratic Party would be hamstrung without California’s 55 electoral votes or national house members.

Also, the new nation of California would quickly learn what its socialist policies do when the USA no longer served as a buffer for their problems.

Pico Act 1859 was the last time California actually passed a bill to split California into separate states. Unfortunately the US Congress failed to vote on the bill, since the Southern States were trying to secede.

Can’t we revive the Pico Act of 1859, have Congress vote on it, and in the process amend the act to create multiple states?

Come to think of it, this sounds exactly like what was happening prior to 1860. Instead of slave states and free states, we now have conservative states and Socialist/Progressive states vying for power. Actually large “Urban Socialist/Progressive Voting Blocks” trying to control elections.

If we can require, through a Convention of States, that each state’s vote in the Electoral College be allocated by how each Congressional District voted (not statewide winner take all), the threat of election fraud would be vastly diminished, and the conservative complexion in Congress would be a lot redder.

I can imagine these Calexit people will be drummed into a boardroom with Nancy Pelosi and given the what for. Not sure how far federal Democrats will go, but they may move heaven and earth to make sure the Cal Exit vote never sees the light of day.

It could lead to an actual conflict. I could imagine eastern California appealing for help from the federal government, and then the Feds demanding the new country give up half their real estate to a new Republican state.

Well, I think you would have a strange situation. A nation with a strong economy, but with a terrible government running the show. You could see the new Cali government trying to get more taxes out of Silicon Valley.

This is just the la raza crowd and the hardcore leftist socialist-democrats in California daydreaming.

As much as the rest of the US would just love to see all of these fruits, nuts, and flakes just go away, they won’t get off that easy.

California would be federalized, revert to a federal territory, and the state government removed before they even have a chance of actual secession.

Go right on ahead and vote for secession, so we can start cleaning out all of the leftists infesting the state.

I don’t get it.

Will they change their mind if a Rat becomes POTUS in 2020?

If that happens, the entire United States of America will become one big California.

My question was rhetorical, they couldn’t survive without federal dollars. See how loudly they squealed when the Fed threatened to hold back money from “sanctuary cities”. And with the insane policies California wants to enact their economy couldn’t possibly support itself.

Exactly. Everyone is dancing around the real issue: the state was subject to a successful invasion. The foreign enemies are now using this beachhead to mount an offensive against the interior US.

The more the illegals push towards more concessions, the more they move towards open rebellion. Like the ongoing slow-motion coup, Trump is going to have to act assertively in remedying this festering issue to bring it to resolution.

Just a few more false steps, and he will have a suitable casus belli for declaring a state of insurrection. At that point, major centers of commerce and government can be occupied by federal troops and the state suspended from congressional representation.

Only until the voter rolls are cleansed, driver licences and other forms of ID for illegals terminated, and state laws brought into conformance with constitutional principles will Calif be allowed to rejoin the union with full rights and privileges.

If Trump doesn't act at some point, then it's effectively 1856 instead of 1861. That is, it only defers action until a greater conflagration occurs.

I would guess that the counties outside of the SF-LA corridor would split from California and ask for readmission.

They ignore the Constitution when it suits them. Virginia never gave permission for West Virginia to secede.

For a while. Socialism works until they run out of other peopel’s money. Socialism punishes the people who work for a living and rewards those who vote for a living.

It sounds like they want to come and go from based on who is President. Like they only want to be American if they like the President.

The Calexit would never include San Diego. They would get a sliver along the coast between Los Angeles and San Francisco.
