Twenty-nine-year-old James Shaw Jr. has been identified as the “hero” who wrestled a rifle away from alleged Waffle House gunman Travis Reinking. Reinking allegedly opened fire in an Antioch, Tennessee, Waffle House Sunday at 3:25 a.m. while wearing nothing but a green jacket. A number of people were injured in the attack and four persons were killed.
The attack ended when Shaw Jr. took away the rifle Reinking was allegedly using in the attack.
Daily Mail reports that Shaw Jr. “was grazed by a bullet and treated for a minor gunshot wound on his elbow.” He also “severely burned” his hands when grabbing the hot barrel of the rifle.
Shaw Jr. was treated at the hospital and released.
When described as a “hero” Shaw Jr. demurred, saying he was just looking for a means of escape. He told the Tennessean, “I don’t really know when everyone said that (of being a hero), it feels selfish. I was just trying to get myself out. I saw the opportunity and pretty much took it.”

The perp is a 29 year old kid that grew up in a upper middle class family. He is 29 and was arrested last year for being in a White House restricted area. He lives in Illinois and his fire arms permit was lifted and four weapons taken away.
His mom and dad have a crane Rental company. Nice, conservative sounding.
Son thinks he is a “sovereign citizen” and not subject to US laws.
Dad gives the son his guns back.
This is like leftists, conservatives or middle road everywhere, they will not admit their adult child is severely mentally ill and needs confinement. Now he has gone out naked except for a jacket and taken his AR and killed four people.
A solid young man out after a night on the town was ready to spring on him and saved many more.

Ditto. I’ve been in a lot of Waffle Houses where the shooter would have been met with a hail of gunfire, and would up with more holes than a block of Swiss. I kid you not.
His mama must be proud...and grateful he survived!

Then the hero goes to church with his Mom. Not Disneyland. We need more men like him.
I am too considering the location. We I’ve down south & yesterday while we were shopping at Kroger a girl, she looked like a college student, had on jeans & a tank top & a handgun strapped to her waist. First time I’ve seen that. She was quite pretty & I was impressed!
Perhaps, especially if the customers had been combat trained/experienced. However, I recently had some very realistic training in how to respond to a situation like this and it is incredibly hard to overcome the freeze response. I read of one survivor who said something like, "My heart was pounding but my body was stuck."
OTOH, Shaw did just what our trainer recommended - even for kids in a classroom at a school shooting: rush the perp. The only "training" most of these perps have had is playing video games. Making noise, throwing things, rushing him is going to distract/disorient him. You have a much better chance of survival than the duck & cover strategy. But it does mean overcoming the basic mammalian freeze response.

Yeah compare the unarmed mr Shaw to the armed bso employee who cowered while Cruz went on his murderous rampage...
I wonder what charges the perp’s dad faces for allowimg him to have the guns back. Or if he even knew he got them.
