Mitt Romney did not win the Utah Republican Party's nomination on Saturday, meaning he must compete in a June primary election as he seeks to replace retiring US Sen. Orrin Hatch.
After a wild and raucous day of voting at the Utah GOP convention, the former Massachusetts governor and 2012 Republican presidential nominee was unable to win the 60% that he needed to head to the November ballot unopposed. When none of the 12 candidates were able to cross that threshold, the party continued with successive rounds of caucus voting until one candidate reached 40%.
On the second round of voting, Utah state representative Mike Kennedy emerged in the lead with 50.88%. Romney came in a close second with 49.12%.
Romney and Kennedy will now compete in a primary set for June 26.
After the vote, Romney said he was looking forward to a primary race. "This is terrific for the people of Utah, and I really want to thank the delegates who stayed so late to give me the kind of boost that I got here today," Romney said, standing on the convention floor after the proceedings were adjourned. "We're going to have a good primary.

One last chance to avoid Senator Windsock.
Bain capital killed toys r us, among others. Kennedy should hammer him on this hard.
That Deep State just aint what it used to be...
BRAVO Excellent!! Mittens is no stranger to defeat. He would be more popular if he was a RAT. I will never forgive that bastard for his anti Donald tirade before the election. It was Vicious.
Interesting that the article is about Romney who came in second instead of Kennedy who came in first.
WOW! Looks like Mitt is not a shoe in after all.
Maybe the people of Utah know Romney is antiTrump and also that he is probably in it for 1 term and wants to have bragging rights but also wants to use the term to flay Trump every chance he gets. Theyve figured out how dishonorable the guy really is.
Mittens, the Mormon flash.
Hopefully the people of Utah will recognize Romney as the Carpet Bagger in the race.
Dude thought he was a shoe-in. Ha!
Looks like he’s a doctor. http://www.kennedyforutah.com/meet-mike/
He would be a much better addition to the Senate than Romney...but Romney’s popularity is also off the charts in Utah (or at least it was...) and the President’s is not.
The problem with this is that I’m afraid we are going to focus a lot of attention and possibly recourses on what is likely a lost cause rather than other races to gain more seats to marginalize Romney’s influence. He will be another Senator who holds the entire caucus hostage to get to 51 votes...unless we gain several other seats with newer younger conservative blood - like Josh Hawley in MO and John James in MI and they would be the future. Romney is the past.
He is such an obvious liar. Go Kennedy!
Finish him off!
God bless the Utah GOP conventioneers for denying Mitt Romney a coronation. Lethim fight in the primary and force him to at least pretend to commit to supporting the Trump MAGA agenda.
Ha! So not only does “Invincible” Romney fail to get the 60% to win outright, Kennedy actually placed first! A 2nd GOP Senator named Kennedy? Why the eff not?
When asked if he supports the President’s reelection Romney said “I will make that decision down the road, As a person of political experience, if I endorse someone, I’ll want to know what’s in it for Utah and what help would he provide for us on key priorities in Utah. So I’m not a cheap date,”
What a faggy, pathetic statement. This after Trump endorses him!
Romney’s sister’s kid kicked off the ballot for Colorado Governor for insufficient signatures.
Padre’s Tyson Ross takes a no-no into the 8th, Padres only team to never have a no-hitter.
Where’s the Simpson’s HA ha guy?
I really never understood the logic of why they brushed aside his son - who is actually from Utah and obviously more youthful - in favor of the former Governor of Massachusetts. Practically speaking if the establishment really wanted a Romney to run for this seat that would have made a lot more sense. Of course it is not the first time they’ve pushed a candidate that made less sense than another available candidate even in their own mold. For supposedly being the experts at politics they sure make some novice-like decisions.
Now in AZ, McSally does make sense as a candidate - youthful, attractive, energetic with a good personality with quite a resume with her military fighter pilot background. Not their typical boring milquetoast candidates. They knew what they were doing there.
In any event, if by some miracle Dr. Kennedy could win this thing it would be interesting - there would be two Senator Kennedys in the Senate, both of whom would be Republicans.
