The politics of victimhood happened at the Starbucks in Philly.

I walked into a bar in NYC and they wouldn’t let me use the restroom (key required) because I wasn’t a paying customer yet.

So I said “oh, okay” and bought a beer, set it down in front of. me at the bar, then took the key and used the restroom, after which I proceeded to drink the beer (and then some more).

This all probably means it’s proof of my embedded, self-assured white privilege since I didn’t immediately yell “RACIST” and leave the bar frothing obscenities at the bartender.

The basic story is that two black men were waiting to meet a white real estate investor over a deal. Either the investor was late or the two men were early. In either case, one of the men wanted to use the bathroom and the manager said they had to buy something first. The men refused.

Most people think the reasonable thing to have done was to buy something to resolve the issue. The men refused.

I have not been following this closely, but I just came to the thought that the reason the men refused the simple request to purchase something was that they expected the investor they were there to meet to buy food for them as they were dealing, and so weren't going to buy something on their own.

Apparently the two males entered the Starbucks, waiting for a third party. They were there for an extended period of time, used the restroom etc. The Manager on Duty asked them to make a purchase or to exit the premises, they refused to do either. She then apparently made a 2nd request and they refused again. She then contacted Philadelphia PD through the 911 system and responding officers arrived, and themselves asked the individuals to leave, they refused and were arrested for trespassing. It’s a pretty cut and dry deal.

People occupying tables without buying anything is a problem in urban areas. Homeless people and the mentally ill take away limited table space from paying customers. Urban locations are often squeezed into old storefronts where space is at a premium anyway.

And the rent shopkeepers are charged is outrageous even in small towns. I've done the arithmetic and I'm amazed that some businesses can even cover their overhead. They can't afford to turn away even one paying customer.

I remember that leftist "occupy Wall Street" thing a couple years ago. Evidently the business owners in that neighborhood suffered greatly as hordes of filthy leftists descended upon their bathrooms and tables leaving no room for paying customers.

I’ve spent a lot of time traveling in the USA.

In almost all urban food/beverage establishments, the restrooms are normally not open.

One either has to wait for someone to exit or ask to get buzzed in.

The policy is normally that they are there for paying customers.

In suburban fast food establishments, the restrooms are normally open. One can normally walk in, use them and leave.

In more formal restaurants everywhere, restrooms are only for paying customers.

I suspect the reason urban restrooms are not open is that homeless people will linger in them, especially in cold weather. However, I’m not sure.

I some cases I’ve had to use them before buying something. I’ve always been let in.

I imagine every urban establishment has a policy that is made clear to the staff.

In cold weather, I’m sure Starbucks get patronized by homeless people who buy coffee, sip it slowly and use the facilities.

Coffee is a diuretic, causing the urge to urinate, as is cola, since both normally contain caffeine. If I buy a soda and have to use the restroom an hour or two later, I do.

Theft of services. Restrooms are usually for customer only and these guys were just sitting there for over an hour without having at least the decency to buy a cheap cup of coffee (no frilly thing) - and when asked to leave they got all huffy and there it all went.

The two guys walk in the door and one immediately asked for the key for the bathroom. He was not a paying customers so he was turned down.A waitress came over and asked if she could get them anything. They said no,2 minutes later the police were called.Police came and told them Starbucks wanted them to leave. They refused and were cuffed. There is a recording of the police call with time line online.Same restaurant turned my friend down when her car broke down in a snowstorm and also a Police Officer. It’s their policy.

The other day we stopped at a Starbucks to use the restroom and, out of courtesy, bought some coffee.

I figured it was only fair. We didn’t need the coffee since we had already eaten breakfast.

Maybe I should have thrown a tantrum and gotten free coffee for life. Oh wait, I am of the “privileged race” so no free coffee fro me.

McDonalds is good about allowing non-customers to use their restrooms so we look for them when we are on the road.

I have been to that Starbucks. Like many buildings in Philadelphia, it is narrow and room is limited. Like many establishments, the bathrooms are locked and one has to ask to use it. In many cases, if one does not intend to pay for anything, they are told to buy something and asked to leave if they don't. This is really a non story blown up by the usual suspects and that the "aggrieved" were black. The situation is further blown up by the countless posturing and apologies from Starbucks and the City. The media carries the hot story/narrative until it fizzles out.

Businesses have these policies not for racism, but to fill seats with PAYING customers and to keep the filthy funky scummy homeless people from infesting establishments. Even the libtards in Philadelphia hold their nose to the street people.

In a rational free society, right of ownership of private property is part of private property rights. Rational right of ownership includes the right to use and dispose of one’s private property as one desires as long as it doesn’t violate the natural rights of others.
