Actually, Assad was pretty much tolerating ISIS, and the Russkis only made a few token strikes against ISIS. The US backed Kurds did most of the heavy lifting against ISIS, which (ISIS) is down, but certainly not exterminated.
If not the U.S., then who?
We either take on the expected and “just” responsibilities, or we and the world will be paying a much higher price later. Without the world’s policeman, the world would have likely experienced a WWIII by now. Luckily, “all” we’ve had are “lesser” regional conflicts (aka: wars), and all of them were not on “friendly” ground.
Lessons of history need to be learned, even when they’re the most awful to learn and digest.

I tend to think that without this sort of action, eventually Israel gets hit with chem or bio weapons, sooner than us, and THAT (Israel getting WMD’d) definitely could lead to a “WW3” (or at least a significant nuclear exchange) type scenario.
