The fact that the 2,232-page bill was jammed down legislators throats with literally no time to read it shows how little has changed in Washington even after the Tea Party.
But the omnibus is not a disaster. In fact, Republicans scored many important wins.
One is the fact that the bill provides massive new spending for defense the largest year-to-year increase in base funding for the Department of Defense in 15 years, according to the bills authors.
That funding was badly needed and will not easily be reversed.
Military.com summarizes the highlights:
The Navy gets 14 new ships, including a carrier; the Air Force adds 56 F-35s; the Army gets 17 Apache and 11 Lakota helicopters; the Marine Corpsreceives 24 vertical landing F-35Bs; and the Coast Guard gets a long-needed icebreaker.
All the troops get funding for a 2.4 percent pay raise that took effect at the beginning of the year, with the possibility for more next year.
The Air Force also gets $103 million for the wing replacement program on the A-10 Thunderbolt as a start in what Air Force Secretary Heather Wilson said earlier this week is a plan to keep the Warthogs flying at least to 2030.
Most conservatives from skeptical libertarians to hawkish neoconservatives agree that national security is the first priority of government. The new defense spending will help the U.S. military catch up to the pace of Chinese expansion, and keep other threats in check.

I am over my rage and find comfort in this article. OK, let’s MAGA. As long as everyone keeps their promises the budget will work out and cuts will eventually come about. Now let’s put some people in jail! Drain that swamp and build that wall.
“...hard to believe that they will have time to spend 1.3 billion...”
Trump is a builder and his manifesto is to deliver his projects under budget and ahead of time.
I do get your overall point and completely agree: 1.3 billion for 6 months is plenty of $ to get started.
The Nevertrumpers whining are missing a lot of the big picture and seem to be looking for ways to turn on the President before they see what he accomplishes with the cards he is dealt by the pathetic congress.
I just had to reply to your hysterical post. Holier than thou types are the worst.
Please don’t use the Amish so triflingly. Call them who they are. Islamists/Mohammadeans.
> Trump had to deal with this Bill to get Defense spending, he wont in the future ones.
Congress no longer works according to a Constitutional budget process. Trump will need to deal with that every year unless he changes something.
As of now, we still have Ryan and McConnell “leading” and paying more attention to Pelosi and Schumer than Trump and his supporters. Every year Ryan’s been in charge, has said “we didn’t have time to do the budget right this year so here’s an Omnibus bill nobody has read. But we’ll do it right next year”.
I see no reason to think they will do a real budget for next year. With elections this year, it’s a 100% guarantee that we get a continuing resolution when we should be getting the appropriation bills. They probably won’t want to push the “budget” past 2018 again so we’ll get an omnibus before they go home for the year and they can enjoy their Christmas. The only way we don’t get an omnibus this year is if the Dems take back the house or senate. In that case they’ll want CRs to take us to the next congress - Ryan and McConnell will be more than happy to let that happen so they won’t be blamed. And you can be sure Schumer and Pelosi are already working on what they can slip into an omnibus this year to “stop Trump” or even better, what they can tell republicans to accept if they take control of the house or senate.
I'm thinking that if we were not involved in just about every conflict on the planet maybe out armed forces could get by on 5 or 6 hundred billion dollars a year. If I am not mistaken we already spend more than any other nation by far on our military. I would prefer to bring the boys and girls home and mind our own business. I am tried to being the worlds police man. How about a little America First for a change? Well that in not likely now that the neocon John Bolten has the presidents ear.
You never met a George Patton, a genius Gemeral that won many battles, but with a penchant for swearing. I fully support the increase in military spending and abhor most of the rest of the bill. There is no honor in being a rat-fink. Free speech is not always honored here, but it should be.
Good post Lee, but wild horses couldn’t drag me back to Texas.
The DOD has become a slow moving fat and happy bureaucracy that has more people focused on gays and transgenders and diversity and sensitivity and safe spaces than on its mission. But it isnt just those things we ridicule. The DOD is involved in hundreds of irrelevant activities and irrelevant equipment.
The DOD should be made mean and lean.””
Agree, but this is the Rat party stamp on the military designed to humiliate and undermine our warriors. Queers should be banned and those that come out prosecuted. Our warriors are not there to satisfy the objects of homo obsessions.
Good article and one that the blind nay-sayers need to read and accept as FACT.
Yep. Hopefully those people wanting to tantrum about this one bill have gotten it out of their system and can get back to focusing on defeating the uniparty soft coup in progress.
I hope you are correct.. That would be a Yuge WIN.
Need a damn like button, badly!!
Some just hate that Trump became POTUS. POTUS has definitely earned my benefit of the doubt. I purposely didn’t listen to radio or TV or read the forums until this morning to let the worse of it blow over.
Pains me to see so many thin skinned Trump supporters. It’s OK to disagree but threaten not voting/supporting POTUS anymore?? What’s that old saying? Throwing the baby out with the bathwater.
The fact that defense spending got a boost in this bill is no reason to look at it as anything other than a defeat. Its pathetic that, after years of Obama’s massive spending increases (and Bush’s spending increases, for that matter), the budget can’t be cut. The Republican’s don’t even try. They don’t want to try. They haven’t wanted to try since the early to mid 1990s. Using the defense increases as a way to defend this budget is pathetic.
Is that your loss or a Texas gain?
Too hot for you? Granted, the state of Texas is no longer the territory it was once; however, it continues to be the best state for me. How long is only a matter of time. The d’rats from all directions are planting their boots on Texas soil. Worse is the fact we’re so dog gone friendly we open our doors and arms for them, inviting ‘em in.
“The Air Force also gets $103 million for the wing replacement program on the A-10 Thunderbolt as a start in what Air Force Secretary Heather Wilson said earlier this week is a plan to keep the Warthogs flying at least to 2030”
Containing and then killing the Islamics in their $hitholes does not require super sonic high tech fighter planes.
The A-10 Thunderbolt is economical and deadly to those who want to kill our people and allies.
What is wrong with Texas?
What is their game plan?
