MINNEAPOLIS When Erin Rathke, the principal at Justice Page Middle School, is called to extract a student from class, she hears the same plea over and over again, most often, she has to admit, from black children: The teacher only sees me.
The plea weighs heavily at Justice Page, where African-American students are 338 percent more likely to be suspended than their white peers. Its painful sometimes, but I have to say, Yes, thats probably true, Ms. Rathke said.
It is a reality that district leaders here have been grappling with for years: The Minneapolis school district suspends an inordinate number of black students compared with white ones, and it is struggling to figure out why. Last year, districtwide, black students were 41 percent of the overall student population, but made up 76 percent of the suspensions.
Numbers like that prompted the Obama administration in 2014 to draft tough new policies to try to address racial disparities in school discipline across the country. Now, the Trump administration is trying to reverse those policies in part, administration officials say, as a response to school shootings like the massacre last month at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Fla.
The Obama-era policies and the Trump-era reversals have divided educators in the Twin Cities. In recent months, educators from Minneapolis, St. Paul and suburban Minnesota traveled to Washington to lobby the Education Department in support of reversing the 2014 guidelines, which encouraged school districts to review racial disparities in student discipline rates to ensure against violations of federal civil rights laws. Those that do not comply can face federal investigation or a loss of funding.
Then another group followed them to lobby for keeping the guidance.

Feral youth raised with no father because the welfare system chased them away might be a clue.
Blacks in the USA kill people at rate seven times that of non-blacks. Taken as a group they are a very violent people.
Propensity towards violence, poor impulse control...
In any animal husbandry scheme, one would stop breeding the green group.
If they were punished more often than whites, wouldn’t they turn out better behaved afterwards than those who escaped punishment, so that most filling station robberies , etc., would be carried out by spoiled-rotten whites rather than blacks?
“I’ll take ‘Because they act out more than White kids do for $400 Alex’.”
Wipipo fault.
“It is struggling to figure out why.” We know why and it is not a struggle. IQ levels (nature) and % of kids with two parent households (nurture).
Young black men: 3% of the population. 50% of the violent crime.
Get rid of the department of education.
It doesn’t teach a single student, yet it engages in social engineering and is now the government agency responsible for the $ Trillion higher-education debt slavery of young Americans.
What is the IQ of these leaders who ask such dumb questions??
Congratulations to your wife on 40 years in public education. It takes exceptional talent, grit and determination to last that long in that environment. I come from a family of teachers; both of my step-sisters and one brother-in-law spent their careers in the classroom. To a person, they are stunned by the changes in student behavior—and school policies—they saw over the course of their individual careers.
The discipline issue is the 800-lb gorilla in American public education. Visit the websites of the Department of Education, the NEA or the AFT. If there’s a mention of school discipline, it is only in the most generic terms imaginable and there is no mention of the problem as it affects specific minority groups.
It is true that black students have more discipline problems, and not because of racism, but due to the pathologies listed by others on this thread. Growing up in a single-parent home with no father figure or positive male role model is the breeding ground for what we see in today’s schools. The refusal of politicians and school officials to deal with it is nothing more than cowardice ad political correctness run amok.
After retiring from the military, I spent three years as a middle school teacher in a couple of poor districts in Mississippi. My last school was 80% African-American; every kid in the school, regardless of ethnic background, was on the federal school lunch program and participation was essential to the district receiving all the federal aid it was entitled to. So, we interrupted class every morning at 7:50 to march everyone to the cafeteria for breakfast. Many of the kids got a free snack after school as well.
Conditions in the school were chaotic, at best. Mississippi allowed corporal punishment, and we did a thriving business. Most of us hated to use that technique, but it underscored that actions had consequences and some of the kids actually learned that lesson, the hard way. Parent-Teacher conference day was always the slowest date on the school calendar, since most of the parents were (a) absent, (b) addicted, (c) uninvolved in their children’s lives, (d) incarcerated or (e) all of the above. Not surprisingly, the few parents who showed up had kids who were the best in our school—the few who showed up on time, knew how to behave, put forth an effort every day and were headed for success, despite whatever obstacles were in their path.
Sadly, those kids in the latter column were a distinct minority in our school. Fifteen years later, I can only imagine how many of the kids in the “other” category are in jail, on welfare, or dead.
I look at their countries of their origin and the answer is quite clear. This should have been addressed at one time when the Africans brought here against their will were allowed to stay and everyone born to be honorary “Americans”. PC be damned. Twenty years at status quo will see America unrecognizable per DNC/Liberal agenda long term planning. We will be a much bigger South Africa in scope of problems.
Because all laws are racis’?
Easy way to tell....just put cameras in classrooms. Two cameras, one at rear of room watching the teacher, and the other at the front of the room watching the class. Video documentation of unacceptable behavior by either party. Link both cameras to the internet and make them password accessible by parents.
Are we to believe that teachers choose quiet well behaved black students to toss out of class because of their melatonin content? Ludicrous!!
No one ever seems to conduct any studies on whether BLACK teachers and principals also suspend Black students at a higher rate. The generic teacher in everyone’s brain is a white lady. Well, I am a teacher, and I AM a white lady, but in every school I’ve taught at in 14 years in Los Angeles, white teachers have been the minority. Like, we’re at about 15-20% in every school. Most teachers in L.A. are Hispanic. I bet most teachers in majority Black districts are Black.
As someone who teaches adults i can tell you the characteristics you describe hold true well beyond childhood.
