MIAMI (CBSMiami) Florida International Universitys massive new pedestrian bridge collapsed Thursday afternoon in West Miami-Dade.
The bridge, located at 109th Ave and 8th Street, collapsed on a number of cars.
There are reports of numerous people injured in the collapse. At least one person was taken as a trauma alert to the hospital, according to Miami-Dade Fire Rescue.
The 950-ton bridge went up on Saturday. It was then lowered into its final position, just west of 109th Avenue that day.
The main span was built next to Southwest 8th Street.
Looks like the Nimitz Freeway after the 1989 San Francisco earthquake.
I guess they won’t be using that approach again anytime soon. Looks like there was not midspan support.
Who is the contractor and designer? Paint has barely dried and it fell. More than 900 tons, completely failed. Incredible failure.
Epic fail !!!
Miracle nobody was killed. I'm only guessing, but an engineering review might be in the offing...
or... “Whaddya mean, you forgot the I-beams underneath?”
Bet affirmative action contractor and designers.
The university had it built. Most of the workers no speekee Eengleesh. Was there an AR-15 involved? Was the FBI aware of the threats before the collapse?
People did die, they say there are dead, just don’t know how many yet.
Miami media is deeply saddened because this takes away their resources from promoting the destruction of the Constitution.
Multiple fatalities reported.
Probably a snowflake. And it cost $14.4M. What a waste of money.
Accelerated Bridge Construction Method.
How’s the traffic tie-ups now?? I’m assuming it will be there awhile as they figure out what went wrong first. Insurance purposes would require some forensic work on the construction materials, techniques, and implementation of those two.
I wonder if anyone was walking across it when it went down?
That must have been shocking.
What’s happening to planning and engineering in this world? The Aussies build expensive new trains that are too wide for the tunnels they are to pass through, and now this new bridge collapses as soon as it is put in service.
The explanations should be interesting.
It hadn’t even opened for foot traffic.
Oh dear. Prayers up then, and no more joking from me.
Governor Brown said to build bridges, not walls. This was a killer bridge.
As an engineer we were taught to use a 2.5 safety factor. This looks like they used .9
