President Trump stunned Democrats and Republicans alike on Wednesday by pushing for gun-control measures that have long been poison pills for the GOP and pipe dreams for their opponents.
The president, during a televised, hourlong sitdown at the White House with a bipartisan group of lawmakers, appeared to back a bill proposed in 2013 by Democratic Sen. Joe Manchin of West Virginia and Republican Sen. Pat Toomey of Pennsylvania that would expand background checks for weapons purchases.
The bill written in response to the 2012 massacre at the Sandy Hook school in Newtown, Conn. failed in the Senate due to intense Republican opposition.
But Trump called it a good starting point and even questioned whether other ideas championed by Democrats, such as an assault-weapons ban and raising the minimum age to buy a gun to 21, could be included in one bill everyone could agree on.
Fellas, if you can all get together and we can get one great piece of legislation people want to see something happen. It would be so beautiful to have one bill that everyone could support, Trump said as California Democratic Sen. Dianne Feinstein sat with a stunned smile on her face.
I think its time that a president stepped up. Im talking Democrat and Republican presidents, theyve not stepped up, Trump said.
Trump also shot down the GOPs proposed Conceal Carry Reciprocity Act, which would allow people with permits to carry guns across state lines.

Bye bye President Trump support, if he continues down this road!
He doesn’t care about the 2A, he just wants to be able to chalk up a win. I guess this is where we get tired of winning.

This is all beltway theater. No need to get your panties in a twist just yet.
That said, if Trump indeed meant what what they say he does, “take guns first, then the process”, it will sink his 2020 bid if another more conservative fella steps up to run against him.
Open an avenue for government to begin stripping folks of their weapons pending review by government of your ability to own a weapon...THEY WILL GO FURTHER.
Just sayin.
the hysteria is quite entertaining. this made-for-the-cameras moment on guns will lead to the same thing as the made-for-the-cameras moment on immigration.
nowhere.
oy, vey. they need to to pass out Zoloft at the entrance of FR these days.
Trump, as always, is grandstanding. He will never receive a bill that closely resembles what he suggested with regard to circumventing due process. He’s right. Legislators are petrified of the NRA. And that will assure nothing gets to his desk that resembles this. If he had any balls, he’d veto anything that doesn’t include it.
Trump stunned the GOP and the Democrats a couple of weeks ago with his impassioned plea for the Dreamers. How did that go?
At this point he is set to be Arnold Schwartzenager, part 2. So far his cabinet has been various levels of failure. He could have randomly drafted people from a trailer park and it wouldn’t have been any worse.
I have been trying to reserve judgement on what I thought were mistakes, but I am almost out of reserve. A very troubling pattern is emerging here.
“Agree on both issues. Its not looking good for our future. Once again I say, ‘Im glad Im old.’”
I hear you. I’m 67 and we have no kids. It’s just me and the wife.
What you said.
“No matter what position he takes on guns it will never translate to more votes from Democrats. They hate him to the core. Kissing up to Democrats won’t help him with the Democrats but will mortally damage him with his base.”
That’s a fact.
I think he’s a one-termer, and for a variety of reasons.
No smiling right now. Hopefully he’s rope a doping the libs with this.
“Trump says he’s strong on 2nd amendment...”
I don’t think he is, really. I don’t think he has any strong ideology one way or another with a firm foundation. If his basic ideology is to “Make America Great Again”, that’s not a terrible thing, but he needs to understand what it was that made America great in the first place.
I think he’ll get it together. Maybe his son can school him.
I was offended about his statement to Pat Toomey about being afraid of the NRA. That showed me that Trump doesn’t “get it”. It sounded like he believes everyone is doing a deal at all times, and doesn’t consider the fact that people have positions on the 2A because it’s the right thing to do. Toomey, et al., would have the same position if the NRA didn’t exist. I don’t believe he knows that.
NRA isn’t a lobbying group primarily. It exists for higher reasons. He doesn’t understand that. I think he will.
You mean like how the FBI did when they got almost 70 warnings?
Looks like his (perceived) power has gone to his head.
“I think he’d sign an AWB in a heartbeat.”
I didn’t used to think that, but now I’m not so sure.
If he presses with gun control, then I see little reason to show up next fall. Why? To vote for GOPE McSally? To help Trump register my guns? If everyone on the ballot opposes me, then why would I vote for any of them?
Maybe it will be like the similar DACA roundtable. He told the Dems exactly what they wanted to hear but by the next day he was back to his original positions.
“Im 67 and we have no kids. Its just me and the wife”
Exactly our situation. Same age. No kids. Just the two of us.
“Fellas, if you can all get together and we can get one great piece of legislation people want to see something happen. It would be so beautiful to have one bill that everyone could support, Trump said as California Democratic Sen. Dianne Feinstein sat with a stunned smile on her face.”
Reminds me of the now famous DACA meeting where the press was allowed to stay & the RATs on both sides of the aisle took the bait lol.
