Updated 2 hours 51 minutes ago A discussion among students at Oberlin High School in Oberlin, La., about a mathematical symbol led to a police investigation and a search of one of the students homes, according to the Allen Parish Sheriffs Office.
On the afternoon of Feb. 20, detectives investigated a report of terroristic threats at the school, where they learned that a student had been completing a math problem that required drawing the square-root sign.
Students in the group began commenting that the symbol, which represents a number that when multiplied by itself equals another number, looked like a gun.

Please, please say this is satire!
Home schooling is needed on a massive scale in this country if we hope to raise a generation that is not rife with complete nincompoops.
Unfortunately not...
If true looks like this insanity will never end.
It doesn’t take much to get snow flakes to melt these days. I keep having a recurring dream that Mexico invades us and all the snow flakes descended on DC and demanded we surrender.
This is bad news for me. I use that square root function quite frequently. It is right on my phone in the calculator app.
I hope I don’t get busted for carrying a concealed algebra function thingy.
Sir! Drop the Calculus before I go all Trigonometry on your ass!
Liberals are extremists. There is no room for common sense or a middle ground with them.
Yeah, well, I’m a tutor of math and science at college, and I’m constantly using it as well as my students. Guess we’re all in big trouble! Actually, all us tutors there must be in big trouble.
Hey, I better alert the hyper-sensitive presumptuous do-gooder leftist PC “president” of our college! She can have police arrest us all!
“the symbol, which represents a number that when multiplied by itself equals another number,...”
Isn’t that usually case except when the number is 1?
That is absolute BS
You assume that homeschooling educates and that home educators are up to snuff.
What you advocate is an illiterate public
Clearly, this student needs some more schooling. When questioned, he should have quickly inserted a ‘-1’ inside the “gun”. Then, he could answer that it was just imaginary.
No escaping it.
Trying to decide if your being rational or irrational...
This is more liberal stupidity than common sense. It’s what liberals have also wrought on our education - teenagers who don’t know what math symbols are!
Wait until you have to register to use it and have to wait 10 days before you are allowed to enter it into an equation. And you can just forget about trying to use a Cube Root!!!
Unfortunately, no.................
