Knives kill far more people in the United States than rifles do every year.
In the wake of the horrific school shooting in Florida last week, the debate over guns in America has surged again to the forefront oft the political conversation. Seventeen students were killed when a deranged gunman rampaged through the Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland Florida. Many are calling now for stricter gun laws in the wake of the shooting, specifically targeting the AR-15 rifle and promoting the reinstatement of the assault weapons ban.
However, recent statistics from 2016 show that knives actually kill nearly five times as many people as rifles that year.
According to the FBI, 1,604 people were killed by knives and cutting instruments and 374 were killed by rifles in 2016.
The statistics match the trends seen in previous years, which show knife murders far outnumbering rifle statistics. In 2013, knives were used to kill 1,490 and rifles were used to kill 285. Handguns far outnumber both knives and rifles in American murders. There were 7,105 murders by handgun in America in 2016.

Nickolas Cruz used his finger.
Cars kill far more people in the United States than rifles do every year.
Traumatic Brain Injurys kill far more people in the United States than rifles do every year.
If you want to murder somebody and get away with it use a knife. Ask O.J. Simpson.
Fingers don’t kill people, people...never mind.
A woman with a kitchen assault knife is far more deadly than anyone with a gun.
“I think the Brits have moved on to Knife Control”
Don’t think for a minute that states, counties, and cities in the U.S. haven’t. They have! For years. And they are not uniformly coded across jurisdictions. Length, mechanisms, locks etc... a quick search will bring up several websites to help unravel.
Heck, you almost need a lawyer to advise on hunting and fishing regs.
There are about 300 million firearms and about 260 million total vehicles (including about 130 million registered passenger vehicles) in America today.
why don't the kids march on Washington about THAT..???
It's difficult to tell because we don't really know why the type was not stated. If it was just because the weapon was not recovered then the number of rifle kills may be less since a fleeing shooter is more likely to drop a rifle than a small, concealable handgun. On the other hand, if the data takes into account cases where no weapon was recovered and no projectile was recovered from the body then the proportion of rifle kills could be higher since rifle projectiles are more likely to over penetrate a body and be lost. Then there is the .22 problem - rifle or pistol...
And what are "Other guns" that killed 186 people? Flintlocks? M777 howitzers?

No, no, no! Don't take away my salt and butter knives! How will I eat? Oh, assault, not salt... never mind...
Or a man with a kitchen knife. When I was a teen, a good friend of mine lost his parents. His father came home and found the mom in the kitchen with another man, and then grabbed a butcher knife and murdered her and the stranger. Friend's father went to prison for murder.
As for guns:347 million, long guns are not registered so couldn't be counted. Thats the 2012 figure. Of those, how many were used to kill? On average there are nearly 13,000 gun homicides a year in the U.S.; that's not considering suicides and accidents. Gun accidents were about 516 people in 2012 and suicides amounted to:21,334.
If people want to kill themselves and no gun is available they'd be finding some other method. There were 42,773 recorded suicides in the U.S. in 2014.
This is by no means to belittle the loss of life but putting the onus strictly on guns is misleading.
Infanticide (Abortion) is the number one cause of death in America. Most of these murders are in fact carried out with a knife (scalpel).
Just saying...
People inject themselves with Heroin, knowing they may be have their last fix with an overdose. Guess what! Heroin is illegal! There is no amount of background checks that will allow you to use heroin. The people using heroin do not care if they go to prison. They do not care if they have a greater chance of death by overdose than getting killed in an auto accident. This same evil that causes the use of heroin is the same evil that triggers murder. It is an evil that has been with mankind since Adam and was expressed with Cain and Able. The method of such expression cannot sidetrack attention from its roots. And the remedy for such evil has been given by our loving and merciful Creator through his son, Jesus Christ.
You nailed it! Good minds think alike. See my post #36.
As we learned from “The Walking Dead,” the sound of guns being fired attracts zombies, but using a knife is quiet and doesn’t attract them.
No, they don't. Knives don't kill people any more than guns kill people.
Lol. New season this sunday.
