A family that lost eight members in the Texas church massacre this month filed a notice of claim on Tuesday accusing the Air Force of negligence for not having filed paperwork that could have stopped the gunman from buying his weapons.

After hearing that the FBI had failed to follow through on evidence that Nikolas Cruz posed a credible threat to carry out a violent act, it reminded me that the Air Force had failed to file paperwork, related to child and spousal abuse, that should have stopped the Texas murderer who killed 26 people in a Sutherland Springs church from being able to buy a gun.

The two worst mass killings in the past year and in both cases, a federal bureaucracy failed to follow prescribed procedures related to both perpetrators, procedures that might have prevented one of both or the mass killings. It sounds like our federal bureaucracies need to tighten up their operations as a first step in making future mass killings less likely.

And since procedures weren't followed in these two cases, we can be sure there are many other cases where procedures weren't followed.

American society creates more dysfunctional people, yet no one will ever take responsibility for their own community.

Responsibility must always be passed elsewhere - higher up and far away, like the FBI or Airforce, because taking responsibility for one’s own and oneself is just too unattractive to people now.

To err is human.

To really screw up takes the government.

Yeah, that’s right...the church members should have taken responsibility for filing the Air Force’s paperwork. How dare they scapegoat the Air Force employees. /s

Clearly the answer is to enact sensible gun laws. </sarc>

To really screw up takes the government.

When I see the NY Post headline "Mr. President- You Must Act" I feel how sad and pathetic many Americans are. They are whining for some far away power to protect them and manage every aspect of their lives. They have given up all responsibility for themselves and their community.

How many school teachers, or local cops knew this kid was dangerous? What did they do? And yet they demand the FBI, or Airforce, or someone in the Feds somehow save them from their own apathy.

Responsibility must always be passed elsewhere

The problem with that is, 42 innocent people were murdered by these two mass killers. And few, if any of them, had ever had any direct contact with their murderers. So yes, the FBI and the Air Force did have a responsibility to take certain steps designed to try and prevent the sort of massacres that these two carried out.

Following your line of 'logic', we should disband all law enforcement and attempts to prevent crimes, and just except everyone to take "responsibilty for one's own and oneself".

Exactly how is it the victims and the victim’s families fault the Air Force and the FBI apparently willfully neglected to do their jobs?

I await your answer.

The error, IIRC, is one in coding how a court-martial was done. Was it assault with domestic violence, or simple assault? Going from memory, the military uses an article in the UCMJ for “assault” since there is not one for “domestic violence”. It then needs the result interpreted as domestic assault - and in a plea bargain, the guy may have actually been convicted on a charge that would not reveal domestic violence.

It may be a case of the UCMJ - Uniform Code of Military Justice - needing to be updated. If so, it will take Congress to act.

The real truth is there is no fool-proof system, and there is no way “government” can prevent these sorts of attacks. That is why I was carrying a Beretta 92 in church yesterday...

We have laws preventing mentally ill people that pose a danger from obtaining guns. What good does it do if the law isn’t enforced? Individuals can’t enforce it, they have to rely on those that have the authority to do so.

I would feel the same way about the Air Force dropping the ball in this case. However, it was the local police who dropped the ball in the school shooting. It was up to them to investigate this kid. And up to them to call in the FBI if they needed them.

All the more reason to make self defense a priority. The agencies can’t protect you. The police can’t protect you. I live in a very nice area and it would take the police...who are excellent... 3 minutes to get to my house if there was an emergency.

Not willing to wait.

39 times the local police were called to Cruz’s residence. And 39 times the local police failed. So blaming the FBI on one report, where the local police had 39 reports and did nothing, well, ai’d have to say that local police and that Sheriff the is so vocal about blaming Trump and the FBI, that Sheriff should get sued and prosecuted for dereliction of duty

CCW permit costs very little, $100. The pistol permit is around $20. And a .40 semi is around $350. Pretty reasonable price for DEFENDING YOURSELF.

I read that the case in question should have been entered by the Air Force into NICS, but was not. It seems it’s just plain sloth.

And up to them to call in the FBI if they needed them.

The FBI had a tip that should have been followed up, and they admit they failed to follow their own protocol.

FBI in Florida shooting case

The FBI had their tip on January 5th of this year, and it was specific as to killing people and shooting up a school, while the local police visits to the shooter's home took place over several years.

It's pretty clear the FBI had probably the most recent and most specific tip, but the local police might also have failed to follow up sufficiently over time, but I haven't seen much detail on that.

... we should disband all law enforcement and attempts to prevent crimes ...

You actually raise an interesting point there.

"Law enforcement" has had its place in American culture and our legal system since the founding of the country. In fact, the entire Bill of Rights was written to address these matters in terms of the relationship between the individual, his State, and the Federal government.

"Crime prevention," on the other hand, is nowhere to be found in the U.S. Constitution. If anything, the Constitution was built on the understanding that a person had to commit a crime before the law could deal with him.

It's also worth noting that you didn't see police officers through much of this country's history. They didn't need them for "protection" because an armed citizenry was the norm. The only role of "law enforcement" was to apprehend criminals so they could be protected from armed vigilantes while they were put on trial under the authority of the state.

The modern police department as we know it grew out of two simple trends in American history: (1) urbanization, and (2) loss of personal responsibility.

It's actually a destructive combination, for sure. That's how you end up with stunted misfits protected by the law while they shoot up schools, and groups of pathetic sheep bleating for someone else to "do something" about it.
