Milwaukee native said enough is enough and turned his semi-automatic rife to Broward Co. Sheriff.

Something needs to change,' says Milwaukee native who turned in rifle to authorities

A Milwaukee native said enough is enough and turned his semi-automatic rifle into the Broward County Sheriff's Office.

Ben Dickmann grew up in Milwaukee, but moved to south Florida years ago. He shared a Facebook post of a sheriff's deputy taking possession of his AR-FiveSeven, which is similar to the AR-15 that was used in the high school shooting in Parkland, Florida.

Dickmann said only law enforcement should have guns that powerful.

"Something needs to change, and it needs to change now," Dickmann said. "People have been doing nothing but talking about it for the last 10-15 years."

As of Friday night, the post had more than 200,000 reactions, and 90,000 shares. He’s been getting a lot of feedback.

"I would say 90 percent has been very positive," Dickmann said. "Ten percent has been very, very negative. Almost threatening."

But one message sticks out to him and reaffirmed his decision.

"I even got a message from one of the parents at Stoneman Douglas privately on Facebook, thanking me for what I did. And that, that right there, meant the world to me," Dickmann said.

Instead of selling the gun, he turned it over to the Sheriff's Office so it can safely dispose of the rifle.

This is not the first time this has happened in recent shootings. Seems a bit contrived, even planned, to me. Or is it just the “look at me. Facebook, I need affirmation in my insecurities that I’m a good and caring person”, generation? Fine, don’t want the rifle? Go turn it in if you want, but do you need the notoriety? Not to mention that you just advertised you’re possibly a defenseless target?

“Dickmann said only law enforcement should have guns that powerful.”

WRONG. The 2nd Amendment guarantees that we the people have every right to have just as much fire power as those in government. If a SWAT member can have a high caliber weapon, then so can I. The founders knew that this provision was needed in the constitution to put fear in any politician or government official who got to big of himself.

Some guy drove recklessly down the street. I turned my car into the police. Make sense?

Good thing the guy didn't drive drunk or you would have turned in your booze too!

Ben’s a marketing coordinator. I bet he’s also a liberal, and bought the gun just so he could turn it in. Which means Ben is also a stupid marketing coordinator. He probably thought his stunt would spark other people to follow his lead. But that would only influence other liberal gun owners, if there are any, to turn in their guns. I guess that’s not a total loss, then.

This is nothing more than a stunt.

Not only is this NOT a dreaded 5.56, more like a .22

Mr guilt could have sold it in about 20 minutes on gunbroker.com and made some money instead of turning it in as a dreaded ‘assault weapon’.

Moron.

If he paid 2K for that, he truly IS a moron. It’s a carbine, appears to be 9mm. Sight may be worth more, but doubt it.

“However, assault rifles aren’t for hunting,...”

That’s odd. I did not see the word “hunting” in the Second Amendment. Hmmmm.
