A Long Island couple has asked a judge to vacate the adoption of two Russian-born children who suffer from serious mental disorders and are now living in state institutions.
In a rare move, Nassau County Surrogates Judge Edward McCarty III will keep his courtroom open for the case, which starts this month, citing public interest in the disturbing facts surrounding the adoption, including the allegation that adoption agencies pulled a bait and switch.
Russian adoptions have made headlines in recent years, with several adopted children dying in the custody of their new American parents, and a Tennessee mother returning her adopted son alone on a plane to Moscow in 2010. Russia banned US couples from adopting its orphans in 2013.
In the case Matter of Adoption of Child A and Child C, the couple asks the court to dissolve the 2008 adoption of purported siblings who were found through Spence-Chapin in New York and Cradle of Hope in Maryland.
The couple claims the agencies described the children, then 6 and 8, as healthy and socially well-adjusted.
But shortly after the adoption, it became clear that the children had serious medical and psychiatric problems, the couple says. The children threatened to kill them many times, the parents claim.

very trendy in several local churches right now to adopt Ukraine teenagers.
I would no more bring an unknown orphanage raised teenager into my home with my own children than I would put a bomb in the middle of my family.
I have been talking about this here but no one has even bothered to respond. He clearly has Alcohol Fetal Syndrome and his first name is spelled in a “foreign” way not usually used in America. Were his adopted parents named “Cruz”? Why don’t we have answers?
Thanks! That’s the first clue I seen provided in this mystery. Looks like freepers are smarter than the lame stream media. (As if that’s a surprise.)
I suspected all of this and yet on another forum (not FR) I was beaten up for suggesting the kid had FAS and that maybe he was from eastern Europe. Why do only conservatives have deductive talent and common sense? Answer me! LOL.
I wonder what has happened to the guy’s brother (half brother?) now. IIRC, one of the school children said the brother had complained about how weird Nikolas was.
The younger brother has been removed from the home where he was staying for a mental evaluation.
BINGO!! I noticed that, too, but hadn't said anything here. It's just weird how we haven't heard much at all about this young man's background. You would think the media would be all over that. Or, maybe not, given the state of the American media today.
He has the look of a Russian orphanage child with FAS/FAE
I concur. It is very hard in this country to get the right help for FAS - many adoptive parents will set their FAS child up for crimes like theft because prison is the place they will get the treatment they need (predictable, consistent environment with medication and no chance to harm others).
There’s seems to be a discrepancy as to when he was adopted. The brothers could not have both been adopted as infants at the same time. Rather than Nik being adopted as an infant, which coincides with the obit photo, there is this report:
Cruz was adopted at age 2 along with his 2-month-old brother, Zachary, by Lynda and Roger Cruz, friends and relatives said. Relatives said Nikolas and Zachary shared a biological mother but have different fathers.
If Nik or both are the result of FAS, this in an opportunity to educate others as to the typically horrible outcomes.
Although adoption records are sealed, I hope some nosey reporter goes digging into this case and figures out from what agency or orphanage they originated. Glad the Russian adoption pipeline stopped feeding their rejects into America.
And where were all the relatives that are now talking to reporters when the orphaned boys needed them? According to Gold, Cruz’s next door neighbor, only he and his ex-girlfriend, Dechamps-(Lantana mobile home), attended Lynda Cruz’s funeral plus her two sons. That’s 4 people in total.
They likely could have filled the entire funeral parlor with all the deputies, case-workers, school counselors, special-ed teachers, and abused neighbors that had dealt with trying to fix this family.
And if they know that, they almost certainly know where the boys were adopted from. Curious that that bit of information isn't being provided.
His younger brother, Zach, was involuntarily committed to a psyc hospital in Palm Beach yesterday. Because he is a week shy of his 18th birthday he can only be held against his will for 12 hours- Baker Act.
I pray that they convinced him to stay and can help him work some of this out, as best as they can. No doubt the State of Florida or PB County would pick up the tab. There is a plethora of youth-young adult addiction and mental health units in PBC - the whole country seems to migrate there. It’s a very pricey money maker for these places.1K-2K per day.
We need to adopt more kids from America, instead of getting babies from sh*THOLE countries... Look around and see what your local Heart Gallery is showing...or go online and visit adoptuskids.com
Don’t be so condescending.
First, because WE wouldn’t need to go overseas if WE hadn’t so screwed the adoption system in THIS country, skewing it in favor of everyone but the people taking on society’s problem, and doing the adopting.
Next, it takes time for the anecdotes to filter through the parents network. It’s not like these countries admit what they are doing. Adoptions from twenty years ago until relatively recently were by and large, predictable. Now, in order to get past the ten year wait time, people will volunteer to take various, but specific, kinds of special needs kids they’ve concluded their family can accommodate, but then the kids they get have needs much greater than the scope of the receiving family’s capabilities.
The one thing I can assure you, after being involve in the process for almost 15 years and knowing what kind of vetting process these parents go through: the last thing they are is “dumb.”
The son of a friend of mine was good friends with a boy in his grade. The boy took a knife and slit the throat of a young child one day on a walking path. He ran to a construction site covered in blood and told them he had killed someone. The victim died in his mothers arms. The teenage murdered was adopted: from Russia. You can search for this case online-

I read that his legal name is Nicolas de Jesus Cruz and that is adoptive father’s last name was indeed Cruz. Nicolas is the usual spelling in Spanish. He changed the spelling to Nikolas for something he posted online.
Wow! I just made the connection. I had been talking to the wife about a kid in my sons Scout Troop.
The kid, Vlad, looks just like the shooter! The kid was adopted by a doctor (ex Navy pilot) and his wife from Russia.
Vlad is a good, quiet kid. 14 years old. But he has major issues. He goes into full meltdown if he sees a spider. Unbelievable, difficult to control, panic attack.
And will sometimes do incomprehensible things like race full speed on a mountain bike off a 10 ledge. On purpose. Only to be taken to the hospital for broken bones and contusions.
But he always has the same look as the shooters mugshot.
He has some syndrome that is not common among American kids. I guess it is the Fetal Alcohol Syndrome.
You first
No. His legal name is Nikolas Jacob Cruz. There were some initial reports that had the name as Nicolas de Jesus Cruz but that person has a different DOB than the shooter and is not the same person.
Scouts is a great activity for these kids
It has done a lot for both of my kids- adopted from Russia - one with FAS
Geez they are not “ serial killers”
We have no idea what childhood horror causes some of their phobias and fears but we can be sure no adult was there to help them
Btw both of my teenagers just came in to tell me they knew my favorite color even though lots of kids don’t know their parents’ favorite color
And to assure me they love me
