Intelligence officials can selectively release classified information to trusted journalists while withholding the same information from other citizens who request it through open records laws, CIA lawyers argued Wednesday. ....The judge in the case appeared to find Johnson’ argument compelling. In a court order last month, Chief Judge Colleen McMahon of the Southern District of New York said FOIA laws do not authorize limited disclosure, to favored journalists or otherwise. “In this case, CIA voluntarily disclosed to outsiders information that it had a perfect right to keep private,” she wrote. “There is absolutely no statutory provision that authorizes limited disclosure of otherwise classified information to anyone, including ‘trusted reporters,’ for any purpose, including the protection of CIA sources and methods that might otherwise be outed.

It is because the reporters are a key part in building propaganda. You don’t let the rubes in on what the narrative is really trying to sell.
The judge should laugh loudly, then decide against the CIA.
Journalists are not special (except in terms of mental illness) in any way. They are civilians without clearance like the rest of us.
The practice, whether or not found to be allowed by law, makes possible mass political manipulation by the intelligence agencies via the media, acting on information the public is not able to independently judge for themselves.
It makes “the press” - which is not the media corporations but THE PEOPLES FREEDOM TO PUBLISH - neither free nor able to be dissected as to distinguishing fact from fiction.
The “media” becomes manipulated by the intelligence agencies and the people become manipulated by the media.
Maybe the emails include coordination to get the right narrative out to the people...and the FBI doesnt want people to realize that.
