Trump wants to slash food stamps and replace them with a ‘Blue Apron-type program’

By Caitlin Dewey February 12 at 6:57 PM

The Trump administration wants to slash food aid to low-income families and make up the difference with a box of canned goods — a change that Office of Management and budget director Mick Mulvaney described in a Monday briefing as a “Blue Apron-type program.”

“What we do is propose that for folks who are on food stamps, part — not all, part — of their benefits come in the actual sort of, and I don't want to steal somebody's copyright, but a Blue Apron-type program where you actually receive the food instead of receive the cash,” Mulvaney said. “It lowers the cost to us because we can buy [at wholesale prices] whereas they have to buy it at retail. It also makes sure they're getting nutritious food. So we're pretty excited about that.”

Mulvaney's remarks drew raised eyebrows from some critics, who accuse the Trump administration official of drawing an unfair comparison between the food stamp program, which delivers an average of $1.37 per meal to America's poorest, and a high-end meal kit that runs $10 per serving.

You do know that there is a strong possibility that a microwave may be their only cooking facility. Plus do you really want a person with dementia who is on SNAP trying to use a stove or oven?

I hope they remove soda, potato chips and candy bars from food stamps.

My teenage son just said "30% of people will drop off, like self-deporting!" EXACTLY! that's ma boy!

He's underestimating. >50% will drop out. It will be a lot more than that if the USDA only distributes a box of milk powder, fruit and vegetables, i.e.) nothing with any real street value.

Good gosh. This is so infuriating.

I was wondering the other day if we could just say we identify as EBT card entitled.

We can demand to add our lobster tails and filets and champagne to the EBT card holder, in line ahead of us, bill.

We’ve paid for more of their ‘credit line’ than they have, so why not??

There are working poor who rely on SNAP to supplement their food budget. Some of these people found out that raises to minimum wage made them ineligible for that assistance. But the increase usually was not enough to meet the new cost of paying everything on their own.

I think I wrote about this before, but at one time my sister was on food stamps when it was really a coupon type program, not a credit card as it is now. She had 3 kids. She said that it was better to sell the food stamps and get money than to buy the food and prepare it. I told her if it was me I would go out and buy the bulk of meat (hamburger, roast) and cook it all up and put it in the freezer for the month. But nope.

We HAVE to get away from giving people what really is just a prepaid credit card that allows them to purchase junk food to live on. If people don’t want the meat and vegetables then they can just find something else on their own. And also we have to stop giving parents food for their children to eat while ALSO giving those same children “free” meals at school. No wonder this country is going broke.

This is just infuriating.

There is enough good tasting nutritious food in this country that goes to waste. I don’t see any reason not to make it available at a reduced price. In other words I don’t think we need to punish the poor by restricting them only to government surplus food.

I disagree with the bread, crackers, rice, and canned goods. Canned goods have a considerable shelf life as does rice. These items are inexpensive. Fresh fruit, vegetables, meats, and dairy however have a short shelf life and are not exactly cheap.

I love the idea. I myself have qualified for the food stamp program and think it is the biggest waste of government money. the reason being that you can spend food stamps any where and because of that they are not spent wisely. those who truly need it and use it properly all ready will not be to upset but the one selling the stamps for drug money or buying steaks then going to the food pantry organizations when they run out of food stamps will not like it. also most who qualify for the program are parents with children and this will guarantee that at least they are getting the needed food and the food stamps are not being resold by the parents.

You do know that there is a strong possibility that a microwave may be their only cooking facility.

That would be a violation of building code, and highly unlikely. And the overwhelming majority of 'food stamp' recipients aren't old folks with dementia. They're young enough to whelp multiple bastards by multiple sperm donors. They can learn to cook.

Yes, and I do think they should also be allowed to buy things to bake with, then they could make their bread, muffins, or a cake for a birthday. That is how I was raised and we never were on food stamps! Not sure why we would need to have separate stores- that could get expensive to build and staff the amount of stores it would take.

At one time they could not “buy” prepared food with food stamps, what happened to that?

Then, it’s time for them to get second or third jobs. Live w/family and share babysitting and living expenses.

That’s what most of us have had to do/help with, at some point in our lives.

Depending on the US taxpayer to subsidize them, at all, but at least for more than one year, is just absurd.

These days it’s nasty stuff. It’s made with oil, is low sodium and has a nasty background flavor. I remember the government cheese from years ago. It was a nice 5lb real cheese comparable to land ‘o lakes American cheese that you could get from the deli. Was truly delicious. Not any more. About the best you can do with it is melt it down with some salsa and call it nacho cheese. Velveeta is better, honestly.

You can’t purchase personal care products with food stamps. They are for food only. But you CAN purchase seeds to grow your own veggie garden with.

Frozen foods a problem? Not when Frozen fruits and veggies are cheaper per lb. Than fresh. Does that mean you shouldn’t be allowed to buy canned/jarred spaghetti sauce? Then why should you be able to buy canned tomatoes? You see, it can digress from there.

I don’t care what the program is, you are not going to contain fraud. There is always going to be a way to make an extra buck.

Sadly, many people don’t know how to cook! That makes my head spin around like a demon possion movie, but it’s true! Engage people in the grocery store in conversation some time, and you’ll see for yourself. I’m not talking about young folks either.

And then, there are the disabled who can’t open packaging it jars, or cans without some help. Some can’t stand on their feet for the time it takes to fix a meal from scratch. Some folks can’t peel their own potatoes or carrots, and don’t have the teeth needed to eat raw veggies.

Some of these folks find a $2.00 Marie Calendar’s frozen chicken with brocalli a treat and a feast.
Heat in the microwave and you have a hot, tasty dinner. You can even do it from a wheel chair IF you have help getting thru the packaging.

The WIC program gives vouchers for specific items like milk, dried beans, juices, peanut butter etc. But, if they made boxed packages, a lot would go to waste because of things like medical issues...not everybody can eat spinach or green leafy vegetables. Not everyone can eat brassicas, or onions, or strawberries. The boxes would most likely be one size fits all.

They can somewhat control purchases by limiting some choices on food stamps for example, non-presweetened cereals, non-sweetened juics, no fruit drinks..pure juices only.

But when they do that, the prices rise for the consumers...all of them. They become profit items.

Finally, if you look around your community with wise eyes, you will see that pretty much everything depends on government funding of one sort or another. Housing, utilities, hospitals, pharmacies, grocery stores, department stores, even fast food...all of them receive their monthly business boost when those public checks come out. Every City and town would end up in a crisis if those subsidies stopped.

It’s too entrenched to make a shift all at once. It has to be gradual and can’t apply to everyone. Want to make a person want to crawl out of the over to hole? Give them a taste of the good life. It has to be taangible, and within reach. Start with younger people. That’s why I’m migrants come here. Hope.

People forgot how to climb, and parents aren’t around enough to teach them. Think.

I love that. Make everything cookable on a hot plate and get people in the habit of making their own meals. I see fast food places that have huge banners saying they accept ebt cards. Lots of middle class people have to scrimp to eat out. Why should we have to pay for people who don’t have any personal responsibility to eat fast food?

Right on, right on, NM!!

Looks like lastchance may be on the wrong forum. This is a conservative forum, where we believe in self responsibility and a hand up and NOT govt hand outs.
