Trump wants to slash food stamps and replace them with a Blue Apron-type program
By Caitlin Dewey February 12 at 6:57 PM
The Trump administration wants to slash food aid to low-income families and make up the difference with a box of canned goods a change that Office of Management and budget director Mick Mulvaney described in a Monday briefing as a Blue Apron-type program.
What we do is propose that for folks who are on food stamps, part not all, part of their benefits come in the actual sort of, and I don't want to steal somebody's copyright, but a Blue Apron-type program where you actually receive the food instead of receive the cash, Mulvaney said. It lowers the cost to us because we can buy [at wholesale prices] whereas they have to buy it at retail. It also makes sure they're getting nutritious food. So we're pretty excited about that.
Mulvaney's remarks drew raised eyebrows from some critics, who accuse the Trump administration official of drawing an unfair comparison between the food stamp program, which delivers an average of $1.37 per meal to America's poorest, and a high-end meal kit that runs $10 per serving.

Stupid people on FR keep confusing SNAP with welfare programs like TANF.
The former is food-based. The latter is cash spent on living necessities.
Both are funded on EBT cards but only the latter can be spent on other stuff besides food.
I’m old enough to remember Government Cheese.
It was actually pretty good!
Kinda a cross between mild cheddar and Velveeta.
You got it. Right now they trade the stamps for all kinds of things.
Amen, awesome idea. I’ve always felt there should be government stores in every city just for welfare recipients where there is a LIMITED stock of genuine food to be provided to each recipient. No cola or junk food or snacks or treats. You want those, buy them yourself. Just privatized stores tasked with providing wholesome food to those in need. Now, I’m not saying just beans and rice. I don’t have any problem giving people canned fruit and apple sauce and OJ and all manner of delicious real food. Just, no more going to KFC with your EBT or worse, hitting up the local liquor store and filling the kids with all the junk snacks from the candy and chips isle.
Trump. Could be the best president since the Civil War. Reagan was fabulous but Trump is just raising the bar.
That made me laugh out loud because it's so true.
Tough shit. They can bloody well learn to cook. It's not rocket science.
EBT cards are money. It is a heck of a lot harder selling Wonder bread and gallons of milk, especially when all the other welfare queens already got their wonder bread and gallons of milk at their own “Blue Apron” type store.
EBT is money. Food is a lot harder and slower to liquidate.
Strange...most non-profit food banks have switched to a “client choice” model to reduce wasted food. Folks often did not use some/most of what was in the prepacked bags.
No more grape soda and Doritos on my dime.
I’m good with it. I have no problem making poor people and their children (who I feel the sorriest for) eating right.
People will be dying in the streets.
My mom would get it. Toasted cheese sandwiches all around. That’ll fill you up. I’d swear it was Velveeta.
It’s racist because in the old days slaves were the cooks.
I think this is a great idea..and it ensures that people are actually getting FOOD with those EBT cards, instead of selling them for drugs and booze
A canned chicken in every pot!
SS1
I also remember it. My mom was a paranoid schizophrenic and was disabled for most of her adult life. My parents divorced because my dad couldnt handle it (though after dealing with it myself I dont blame him).
This is probably why I am soft on this issue. We were poor and only had a place to live because of my grandparents. I keep hearing about these welfare queens but have never seen one myself.
The good thing about growing up like that was it made me very motivated to do something with my life. I now enjoy a very comfortable upper middle class lifestyle where people I grew up with that had much better home lives than I had are not.
It still outrages me to think of it.
plus a monthly pee pee test
Yup.
I’m with you on that.
