Trump wants to slash food stamps and replace them with a ‘Blue Apron-type program’

By Caitlin Dewey February 12 at 6:57 PM

The Trump administration wants to slash food aid to low-income families and make up the difference with a box of canned goods — a change that Office of Management and budget director Mick Mulvaney described in a Monday briefing as a “Blue Apron-type program.”

“What we do is propose that for folks who are on food stamps, part — not all, part — of their benefits come in the actual sort of, and I don't want to steal somebody's copyright, but a Blue Apron-type program where you actually receive the food instead of receive the cash,” Mulvaney said. “It lowers the cost to us because we can buy [at wholesale prices] whereas they have to buy it at retail. It also makes sure they're getting nutritious food. So we're pretty excited about that.”

Mulvaney's remarks drew raised eyebrows from some critics, who accuse the Trump administration official of drawing an unfair comparison between the food stamp program, which delivers an average of $1.37 per meal to America's poorest, and a high-end meal kit that runs $10 per serving.

So those people get microwave meals. Easy peasy. They get a menu. Group A can cook. Group B can’t cook but can read. Group C can’t cook and can’t read. Group D needs to be reminded to breathe.

Easy peasy Japanesey. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toyota_Production_System

Some folks can’t peel their own potatoes or carrots...

Scrub them clean and cook them. Peeling wastes nutrients.

Quit your damned bellyaching. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kaizen EBT is supposed to be temporary help not a way of life. My niece got knocked up by a third generation EBT welfare Section 8 housing loser. When she kicked him to the curb the family threw her 1 year old a big party. That kid will never ever be a burden. We will see to that. He is extremely strong now at 5 and I am hoping for a Navy SEAL.

For fun could stock the stores with organic/GMO free...

Organic is one of the biggest scams...they use the crap as fertilizer, instead of the chemicals the crap has to break down into to be used by the plants. And they don't use (safe) pesticides, so losses in the field are increased. You pay more for the inefficiency of that system. Put a so-called organic carrot or potato alongside one chemically fertilized and you can't tell the difference.

For the home gardener, manure (composted) is great for soil conditioning and fertilizing, but for mass production it is less efficient.

You got that right. Organic is a scam just like the cult of Global Warming, oops we screwed up Climate Change, oops again Global Cooling. Nutrients are nutrients no matter their source be it a factory or the ass end of a cow. Plants don’t care.

I do insist on antibiotic free proteins.

I am not a moron. I really wish everybody would. We are creating superbugs. Evolution is a fact and we are evolving resistant bacteria in our pigs cattle chickens sheep fish goats ducks etc. It is gonna bite us in the ass.

Re: “an average of $1.37 per meal to America’s poorest...”

Deliberate deception.

The amount you get is based on your income and your essential expenses.

In Washington state, a single person earning $23,400 a year is eligible for at least $16 a month in Food Stamps, plus subsidized “Life Line” phone service.

There are exceptions to every rule. On the average, though most people are smart enough to cook. Maybe we will not ever be “chefs”, but there is no reason to starve.

That’s not for them to eat.. that’s for the very lucrative black market. We should count that as income.

It’s worth a try, but I wonder whether transportation costs and servicing handicapped recipients might cost more than the saving from bulk purchasing.

So my big question is WTH is wrong with you?

NO. WTH is wrong with YOU???

We have a cradle-to-grave "welfare" system that PROMOTES multi-generational dependency, bastardy, and incompetence. We FINALLY have an administration willing to try fixing it, and all you (and others) on this thread want to do is whine and complain.

YOU'RE PART OF THE PROBLEM!!!

"If it can’t be cooked in a microwave the masses will starve."

Perhaps. Maybe they should develop some cooking skills.

Government cheese was produced to high standards and of good quality, made by the leading cheese producers in the US. Blending, bulk packaging and bulk purchase kept the price down. Cheese, butter and dehydrated milk was the best way to store the over production of milk due to the subsidies the milk industry was receiving.

The CHIPS program has excellent restrictions on what food can be purchased. Perhaps a percentage of FS should have to be used for those foods. When food stamps first began, they were restricted to nutritional, basic food. Then liberal whiners argued that it was demeaning or whatever for FS recipients to be told what to eat.

I don't like President Trump's idea. I'm not even sure it's possible to define "healthy foods" without confusion. If food purchasing is taken out of the regular retail outlets, we'll all suffer. FWIW, I go to a store where there are a lot of gov't assistance shoppers, and their restricted budget keeps prices and choices lower cost than many stores. What happens when non-elite stores close because they lose those customers? Perhaps a solution would be to keep the food stamp program but anyone who abuses it permanently lose them. A better answer would be if US citizens in lower and middle classes earned a living wage.
