Democrats need a positive platform - not just anti-Trump sentiment - to win in this fall's midterm elections, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer said Monday.
"You cannot just run against Donald Trump," the New York Democrat said. "It is the job of we Democrats to put together a strong, cohesive economic group of proposals aimed at the middle class and those struggling to get there."
It was Trump's ability to connect with those voters, particularly working- and middle-class whites in the industrial midwest, that delivered him the presidency in 2016.
But the president's poor approval ratings, Democrats' ability to flip a string of Republican-held seats in recent elections, and the party base's fury over Trump's actions have encouraged many top Democrats to focus more on Trump than on their own platform.
That's a "mistake," Schumer said.
Voters want to hear what Democrats will do to create the environment for their economic security and prosperity, he argued.
"There's a lot of discontent in America, people don't have faith in the future," Schumer said. "We have always been the party of economic advancement, and I think we've lost some sight of that."

Even Schumer admits it. Campaigning against somebody can get you attention, but only take you so far as a candidate.
Is Miss Nancy ready to say the same thing?
That's a "mistake," Schumer said.
Chuckie's right about that, because that list is made up of media distortions and outright fictions, and to believe your own propaganda is to lose.
The problem is everything they stand for is either immoral or based on communism.
Uh Oh, they realize that they hate Trump and that’s all they have.
The problem is that “anti-trump” is all they got. Everything else has been discredited.
A tourist walked into a Chinese curio shop in San Francisco. While looking around at the exotic merchandise, he noticed a very lifelike, life-sized, bronze statue of a rat. It had no price tag, but was so incredibly striking the tourist decided he must have it. He took it to the old shop owner and asked, "How much for the bronze rat ?"
"Ahhh, you have chosen wisely! It is $12 for the rat and $100 for the story," said the wise old Chinaman.
The tourist quickly pulled out twelve dollars. "I'll just take the rat, you can keep the story".
As he walked down the street carrying his bronze rat, the tourist noticed that a few real rats had crawled out of the alleys and sewers and had begun following him down the street. This was a bit disconcerting so he began walking faster.
A couple blocks later he looked behind him and saw to his horror the herd of rats behind him had grown to hundreds, and they began squealing.
Sweating now, the tourist began to trot toward San Francisco Bay.
Again, after a couple blocks, he looked around only to discover that the rats now numbered in the MILLIONS, and were squealing and coming toward him faster and faster.
Terrified, he ran to the edge of the Bay and threw the bronze rat as far as he could into the Bay.
Amazingly, the millions of rats all jumped into the Bay after the bronze rat and were all drowned.
The man walked back to the curio shop in Chinatown.
"Ahhh," said the owner, "You come back for story ?"
"No sir," said the man, "I came back to see if you have a bronze Democrat."
That doesn’t mean they can’t get 51% of the people to vote for it.
So is Schumer saying it’s time to stop “resisting”, to “normalize” Trump and treat him as a normal politician?
Sounds to me like Chucky wants an economic war with Trump. Who knows what slimey tricks he has in his fetid brain.
I noticed the look on his face during SOTU. He seemed embarrassed. (Do Rats even have the capacity to experience embarrassment?)
Let’s not help the dems out here. Trump is doing fine without having to explain himself and his policies to the public. The onslaught of whining and hating by the dems and the media is keeping politicians from objecting to his policies (most of them anyway).
Whenever the news cycle goes to policy, the Republicans fold like a chair. As long as they keep screaming racism, sexism, homophobic, radical, Russia, Russia, Russia... they aren’t objecting to executive orders and policy enforcement.
>> Demorcrats can’t just be anti-Trump.
No. They have to be anti-American, anti-military, anti-conservative, anti-patriotic, anti-white, anti-Christian, anti-normal, anti-flyover country, anti-responsibility, anti-gun, anti-work, anti-heterosexual.
Did I miss any?
lol... Schmucky buys a clue
The Dems who can speak with diplomacy and articulation are either retired, or have been rejected by today’s panel of loudmouths. From the sound of it, there are too many (wannabe) Chiefs, and not enough Indians.
Just ask Tom Perez.
The sad thing is, that’s the best they’ve got.
They have no platform other than anti Trump. They are hemorrhaging the white working class in the Rust Belt states. If Trump and the Congress to get the manufacturing states in the Midwest humming, the Dems are done. They’ll become a ten state party (New England and the Mid Atlantic and the West Coast.)
Too late, that train has left the station, as the Dems are set to make 2018 a referendum on to impeach or not to impeach - that will be the main election question, and nothing short of a mass come-to-Jesus repenting and conversion by the left can stop that.
Leaky Adam Schitt has even dragged Dianne Feinstein into loony territory.
