House Intelligence memo released: What it says
Washington Examiner ^ | 2/2/18 | Byron York

Posted on 02/02/2018 8:52:17 AM PST by markomalley

The House Intelligence Committee has released its controversial memo outlining alleged abuses of secret surveillance by the FBI and Justice Department in the Trump-Russia investigation. Here are some key points:

* The Steele dossier formed an essential part of the intial and all three renewal FISA applications against Carter Page.

* Andrew McCabe confirmed that no FISA warrant would have been sought from the FISA Court without the Steele dossier information.

* The political origins of the Steele dossier were known to senior DOJ and FBI officials, but excluded from the FISA applications.

* DOJ official Bruce Ohr met with Steele beginning in the summer of 2016 and relayed to DOJ information about Steele's bias. Steele told Ohr that he, Steele, was desperate that Donald Trump not get elected president and was passionate about him not becoming president.

The FBI and Justice Department mounted a months-long effort to keep the information outlined in the memo out of the House Intelligence Committee's hands. Only the threat of contempt charges and other forms of pressure forced the FBI and Justice to give up the material.

Once Intelligence Committee leaders and staff compiled some of that information into the memo, the FBI and Justice Department, supported by Capitol Hill Democrats, mounted a ferocious campaign of opposition, saying release of the memo would endanger national security and the rule of law.

But Intelligence Committee chairman Devin Nunes never wavered in his determination to make the information available to the public. President Trump agreed, and, as required by House rules, gave his approval for release.

Finally, the memo released today does not represent the sum total of what House investigators have learned in their review of the FBI and Justice Department Trump-Russia investigation. That means the fight over the memo could be replayed in the future when the Intelligence Committee decides to release more information.

The memo also exposes sensitive “sources and methods.” Turns out the “premier law enforcement agency in the world” relies on Yahoo news as the basis for their FISA warrant applications.

That's a kill shot.

With what, precisely?

I agree that Rosenstein is guilty as charged, and needs to be fired, preferably by Sessions, but good luck with that.

I predict that Sessions will remain the sphinxlike statue that he's been, all throughout this scandal.

It says that there was a wire tap on Trump, based off of Democrat purchased file, and that the .gov knew the source of the file.

It means the FBI was doing op research on Trump.

Kind of surprising that it says pretty much all we had suspected it would say.

From what I have read is this memo is chairman Devin Nunes thoughts on all the evidence his committee has sifted through.

NOT evidence in itself. This is important why we should be careful how we approach this issue.

It is HIS take on what the FBI has been up to and it is understandable why those in the FBI doesn’t want it released.

While the Nunes memo may be incorrect or incomplete, I cannot for the life of me understand why it’s release is being touted as a “threat to national security”?

Taken as it is, at the very least it paints an agency that is incompetent and easily duped. OR has members in key positions that are corrupted or were always corrupt and put in positions of influence as pawns of the corrupt Obama administration.

It may be a threat to those bad actors and their job security but the nation is safe from foreign intrigue with it’s made public.

But “national security threat? That’s a laugh!

This means that all FISA obtained information is "fruit of the poison tree" and cannot legally be used.

IF this was a regular trial this would be true but impeachment(the big threat to the President) is a different critter.

Impeachment is the only way to remove Mr. Trump and all the Dims need is to get a few weak knee Never Trumpers to join their ranks.

I'm not a lawyer but that's what I get out of hearing both sides.

legitimate expectations of additional legal actions to finally put a stake through the heart of the worst politico/criminal conspiracy in our nation’s history.

Uh, you do realize the memo is Chairman Nunes's(and the House Republicans) take on the evidence presented to the committee?

It is a partisan document on THEIR views on what the evidence says.

I'd wait and see what the Democrats have up their sleeves before singing "Ding Dong, the witch is dead"

Remember Hillary's emails?

Does this not immediately render the Mueller investigation illegitimate and unnecessary?

So what effect does the FISA fiasco have on the indictments and pleas for lying to the liars?

I still don’t understand why the FBI and DOJ would throw a hissy fit about what we know whats in the Memo so far...well I do..but you know what I really mean

I'm with you. NOTHING in this memo has ANYTHING to do with "national security"... UNLESS...

They conflate "national security" to mean their JOB security("they" are a national resource")

AND it's imperative to get Mr. Trump out of office no matter what! Partisan, in other words.

were members of the FISA court living under a rock?

The FISA court has no investigative arm and relives solely on the information presented to it by the intelligence agency.

Future request will be given a jaundiced eye(if the court survives as it now exists.)

Kabuki theater. Dems run around like chickens little - memo release would be very damaging to Nat’l. Security. Memo is released - Comey tweet indicates no big deal.

Dems are desperate to stir up hate and anger against Pubbies. Divide and conquer is all they got. No telling what all they are now doing to sell us out, while they keep RUSSIA RUSSIA RUSSIA going.

Big LIE repeat it loud and often, eventually people accept it as true. Especially low info voters.

Is there one committee, or two?

It’s one... and it voted to produce the memo. That the rats didn’t win because they didn’t want to play does not mean there are two equal committees.

Is there one supreme court, or two, each issuing separate but equal rulings so that every case has two outcomes and is never resolved?

If we continue to allow the rats to change the rules to whatever is expedient for them by going along with their nonsense, then in addition to writing their own reports, their next step will be to elect their own president and build their own white house, build their own capital building, and to create their own court.
