Whispers are rampant throughout D.C. that a vacancy is imminent on the U.S. Supreme Court - one that is currently taken by one of the most liberal members of the Court.
It has the Trump White House giddy over the prospect of potentially and forcefully shifting the balance of power on the Court while Democrats in Congress are said to be warning White House staff of a prolonged and brutal fight should President Trump attempt to replace a liberal Justice with a hardline-conservative nominee.
The reason for the Justice's alleged departure is said to be "ongoing illness/physical limitations."
The first on the Court that comes to mind given those clues is 84-year old Justice Ruth Bader Ginsberg. Justice Ginsberg has visibly slowed down a great deal in recent years, and has been prone to falling asleep in public, even when on the bench. Ginsberg's office has taken to pushing back on rumors of her health issues via a series of left-leaning media publications, but Court watchers have noted Ginsberg's increasingly limited public schedule of late.
Despite his 79-years, Justice Stephen Bryer's place on the Court apparently remains secure, but not so with two others - swing-vote Justice Anthony Kennedy, 81, and liberal Justice Sonia Sotomayor, 63.
Justice Kennedy, a moderate liberal (or moderate conservative depending on who you talk to) has already hinted at possible retirement, so he is not the likely source of the current Supreme Court rumors. Justice Sotomayor, though, despite being among the Court's younger members, is said to be struggling greatly with her workload as she deals with a worsening diabetes condition. Court watchers have noted a visible decline in just the last year where she appears to have aged ten years. Rumors are also swirling regarding staff having to take up an increasing workload for the ailing Sotomayor who is said to have difficulty maintaining her train of thought for more than short periods of time. And like Ginsberg, Sotomayor's staff is working hard to orchestrate a media-driven narrative to counter rumors of her decline.
Here is the thought that is now keeping the far-left elites up at night. Justice Kennedy might very well be preparing for retirement. That would be one Supreme Court vacancy. And if the rumors of ill health regarding Ginsberg and Sotomayor are in fact true, that could be two or even THREE vacancies on the Court for Trump to fill within the next year or two.
BEWARE THE JARVANKA LIBERALISING VIRUS
Don’t think for a moment that the DemonRatz would not hesitate to stuff the court with all hard core Fidel Castros and without a thought to throw a conservative a chance for a seat.
We will a absolutely get three more swings at SCOTUS in the next 5 years...
mark
We’re it me, every time a lib justice is around, I’d have a balloon and pin handy to surprise them.
I want nine non-political, impartial judges of facts and of law. That’s the job description.
Depoliticizing the courts is a major requirement for any serious anti-corruption effort.
They have already done that. Remember Gorsuch?
Collins & Murkowski are iffy!!
So do I. But we are wishing for unicorns and ponies to expect this.
I've known quite a few judges; they all have opinions because they are people. We are seriously infected now. I just can't imagine someone rising to the level of judge who really holds no political opinions. Ironically, the best judges, in my opinion, would be the "uneducated masses" who know right from wrong and can read the law and apply it.
“Ginsberg has already said shes not going”
She might not have any say in the matter. She is old, may well have cancer.
It’s time for The Crypt Keeper to step aside. Congress should absolutely go nuclear on this. What would be the downside? Would they obstruct the POTUS more that they do now? Would the media be more unfair? Would the democrat base hate him? If the left ever regains power in this country, they will be completely controlled by a socialist/communist base. Do this while we can, for as long as we can.
To bad Milo Yiannopoulos doesn’t have a law degree
Exactly. SCOTUS hung in the balance this time. Something about which I constantly reminded myself when things got rough.
Pray it is the “wise” Latina. At 63 she has a long time on the Court if healthy. And, every bit as batty and the old bag RBG.
The left can demand anything they want. President Trump is not particularly interested in their little tantrums.
Forget it.
The SCOTUS has been political since the beginning.
What is needed is to reduce the jurisdiction of the US District Courts to their own judicial districts. Nationwide actions would require SCOTUS to initiate them.
I think the American People are entitled to know if all of the SC justices are alive and mentally fit to serve. Who knows if Ginsburg is still breathing, or is mentally “aware”? We have to rely on the Media to tell us the truth, wherein lies the problem!
I had no idea there was anything wrong with Sotomayor, the Wise Latina. Besides being a stone cold racist, she probably had to be coached on how to spell her last name.
As another poster said, I hate wishing a disease on anybody, but God does His own will and usually does not ask me.
Trump has the 58th term - Gorsuch was the 113th justice - so 2 per term is about right.
In recent years, Carter had zero but Nixon had 4 in his first term (extenuating circumstances though with Earl Warren/Warren Burger and Abe Fortas/Harry Blackmun).
Rare though would be a vacancy in the middle of a term.
Buzz is not going, she said.
