The kids are grown and gone. I live in the Northeast. I am looking to move to a small city or town or village. I am healthy, happy and adaptable.
I would prefer a place that has a conservative base. Every location on the lists of best places to move are leftist s***holes.
I am hoping for a place with four seasons, albeit, not as severe as the northeast. Elevations are fine, beauty is important, and so is the need of good, friendly people.
Any ideas?
I know that.
I used to live in Upland and have friends in Rancho, nice place. St Peter and St Paul there was my parish for many years. Good luck!
Kerrville?
Your point about the good things related to NYC emphasizes something this whole thread reveals — we live in a great nation with many, many wonderful places to live.
I got to travel a lot in my work as well as take some vacations. I have to say there are places in all 45 states that I have visited that would be just fine to live the rest of my life in and enjoy myself. Sure, there are drawbacks to coastal Maine in the winter but have you seen it in the summer? Just WOW. I think the Boston Mountains in Arkansas can make me forget Hope’s most well known son. It goes on and on.
We don’t live in a crappy country and why would Democrats in government attempt to force migrants from poor countries down our throats just to change the make-up of regions for self confessed political gain? What scum they are — not the refugee, the Democrats bringing it about — scum, trying to hurt all these untold regions.
Sheridan, Wyoming. ...if you don’t mind snow.
The food was delicious, the service was exceptional, and the waitress was wearing a long sleeve shirt with 'Ruger' printed along the left arm.
So I'm thinking this is a great place to settle down.
But then we drove through downtown, and although it is really pretty, it was a zoo of people and car traffic. Not as bad as the rotary-ridden roads of Sedona, but surprisingly hectic.
Yikes! That does not leave much state ;(
If it gets to the point where I can't afford to live near the coast, I'm heading out of the state completely.
LOL 57 states ;) We live/lived in interesting times...
I am right there behind you on this...However, since we lived there before, there is a comfortable familiarity to east Tennessee.
I am tired of invasion too—IL is now a SANCTUARY STATE—Thank you sooo much Rauner, REPUBLICAN RINO GOVERNOR :(
Same thots on TX...hate to see the invasion taking hold :(
Thinking of a drive down to Gatlinburg later this month...
Will freepmail you with a few more comments/questions. Glad things are working out so well for you, CottonBall!
Are you concerned about TX having gained sooo many new “residents”??
I’m familiar with W. KY and concur with most of that. I don’t think that snow from last week is going to melt until late this week tho’ — NWS blew the forecast and parts of W. KY not only got 2x what was forecast last week, today most got 3-4x what was forecast over a pretty general area (not localized banding - a front “hung up”.) Looks like lows around 4 deg. F the next couple nights, but by next Sunday NWS says 58 deg. high @ Paducah. It’s still not “Michigan”, but then I was around for the 2009 mid-South ice storm. THAT was NO fun! Summers are pretty humid; also expect a fair amount of severe t-storms in spring & early summer especially — like a lot of the USA. Paducah has 2 fairly good size hospitals & Vanderbilt is not too far away — ditto Barnes Hospital in St. Louis. The City has a lot of festivals and activities for a town its size. W. KY is generally a moderately conservative area, but quite a few local “Blue Dog” dem pols are still around - some of whom are crooks or worse: Web search “Julian Carroll scandal” only if you wish to become nauseous. But Pubs are generally getting the upper hand in KY. In addition to Land Between the Lakes, the rivers, and 3 most interesting “wildlife management areas” west of Paducah, much of the Shawnee National Forest is under 90 minutes away (in IL) with many nifty little spots tucked away in it, plus several State Parks and other such facilities. Many are usually low traffic / usage. Drive an hour up to “Devils Kitchen Lake” for an almost Canada-like experience (short hikes to rock ledges overlooking a clear, 90 ft. deep lake — supports rainbow trout year round), fish the Ohio or Mississippi Rivers for “monsters”, or drive 45 min. (?) west of Paducah & find Cypress swamps / lakes — stay after dark and wonder what those “human size” splashes are! But in the summer be sure to bring plenty insect repellent. (The IL parks seem fairly mosquito free.) All in all, there’s nothing spectacular like one finds out West, but there are lots of nice spots, some intriguing, to discover, if one likes the outdoors. Later on, plenty of retirement apts. have gone up around Paducah, should things come to that.
All that said, there is a lot to recommend in the Missouri and Arkansas Ozarks, too. One of my best friends plans to retire from the Chicago suburbs to something like Bull Shoals or Norfolk Lake in AR.
I may have missed it - did anyone post anything about Southern Indiana?
I’d guess most of it is fairly conservative. Parts I’ve driven through seem nice. However, outdoor recreational locations seem rather limited compared to S. Illinois or much of KY or the Ozarks area (MO, AR).
This back-and-forth is VERY helpful to me. I had no idea about the Inland Empire. OK. Soooo...., I have lived in Torrance, a comfortable and familiar area , and so may make the move back to the South Bay. I’ll need a place to set up in SoCal for after June because I may need to sub in LAUSD. Or I just might “hit the road” and see what else awaits outside LA. Thanks for the “heads up.”
Upland — thanks needs to be checked out. Thanks.
Inland vote

yes, this thread makes me want to go traveling!
and there is no one perfect place - everyone has their own criteria and personal preferences and hobbies and weather tolerances.
But there are a lot of great places to visit!
Gardena, Inglewood, and Hawthorne (especially on the westside) are on the way up due to the new Rams/Chargers stadium and SpaceX with all their new employees.
There's lots of new money pouring into the area which is making nice placer nicer (and maybe too expensive) and once bad places livable.
Best of luck on your choices.
I am. I travel from Morristown down through Jefferson City to the fringe of Knoxville. That area is rural, small town with a 4 lane hiway and an interstate and 15 miles or so in either direction to city stuff including big time medical facilities. Near by is dandridge that is also a small town.
The area is great for someone wanting to escape a city.
oh ok. ill Check it out sometime!
As far as Im concerned, anywhere in this area is just beautiful, friendly people, a great place to live.
