Really?? Those steps are used by maintenance people to clean and service the pool and fountain. And the memorial is for those who DIED. I suspect MOST veterans who lost friends in WWII would be incensed by this.
People from shithole countries shit on everything.
The park rangers are at fault. They should patrol this. These people are different culturally, so they don’t truly understand. It looks like a swimming pool to them.
The architects did not anticipate this, and it is not a good design for the masses with different perceptions of what they are looking at. Many do not fully grasp the meaning of this memorial...especially if they are recent immigrants.
Perhaps a simple fountain without the large pool would have been enough of a statement in the design. Why the big pool? I have been there and I don’t know why this large pool is necessary for this memorial.
It gets brutally hot in DC, so why can’t they make a small mist area along the Mall somewhere for those seeking relief from the heat...it could be tastefully constructed.

Yah really. Sure those steps can be used by maintenance , but thousands of fountains have no steps so your premise does not hold water haha.
As to the memorial being for those who died, your assertion is again incorrect. The memorial is for the living to help us remember those who served. How do I know? Because I responded to the first call for donations and made a donation on behalf of my father who served. So did all my siblings. My father is no longer ariound but I think I can speak fairly accurately for him and I don’t think he would have cared all that much one way or another. He was daily laid back and did not talk much unless forced to. Most. WWII vets I knew were like that.

I agree. Moratorium on immigration. I’m tired of seeing the posters on walls of U.S. Embassies and Consulates abroad inviting foreigners to take advantage of tax-payer provided benefits in the United States. On the walls of our own Embassy in Manila, for example, Filipinos learn where to sign up for all kinds of aid when they get to America.
The memorial is to honor the dead, as well as the survivors. Naturally, the dead can’t visit it; the living do. Duh. If your dad wouldn’t object, that’s up to him. But if the 99% of the posts here are any indication, I’m guessing most people do.
But just in case I’m wrong, here’s a quote from the FAQ section of the National World War II memorial website:
“Why can’t I wade in the Rainbow Pool?”
“For reasons of safety and respect. The pool contains many lights and sharp fountain heads that could injure visitors. American and Allied victories are celebrated here as are the millions of soldiers, sailors, airmen, and marines that fought to secure those victories. Please honor our veterans by respecting the symbolism underlying the memorial pools and water features.”
OK, what i recall reading in the flyers i received from tom hanks was that it was to memorialize all who served, living and dead.

I’d like to stop all the people who have no intention of assimilating, from coming here, but I don’t think most Filipinos are like that. The ones I’ve known and worked with are the most hard-working individuals I’ve ever seen. Filipinos, for the most part, have been taught through the last several generations, to have gratitude and love for America, and they make excellent citizens.

and yes, imho the soldiers who fought and witnessed death firsthand are uniquely qualified to appreciate life and the living in all dimensions.
my father was a b-17 pilot. i contributed to the memorial, while he was still alive.
imho it makes no sense to building a memorial if no one comes to visit it.
I would rather have no one visit it then to have it desecrated.

well i helped by donating to pay for it to honor my father and his buddies, in my memory and the memory of others.
it was not my intent when i donated to demand anything from anyone. that is freedom of thought. i think that is what they fought for.
it can mean to you whatever you want it to.
Maybe we should call it The SteveH Memorial.
