New era opens in California with first sales of recreational marijuana
San Francisco Chronicle ^ | January 1st, 2018 | By Jill Tucker and David Downs

It was six hours past midnight, but the crowd inside the Berkeley Patients Group counted down the seconds.

“Happy New Year,” they yelled at precisely 6 a.m. as a cashier rang up the cost of three joints, a $45.37 purchase representing one of the first recreational marijuana sales in the state.

The moment marked the launch of a new industry in California, one that’s heavily regulated and taxed, with revenue reaching several billion dollars per year.

The day has been long anticipated by cannabis advocates who pushed for voters to pass Proposition 64 in November 2016, largely decriminalizing marijuana and allowing for the commercial sale of products to adults 21 or older.

Earlier, Berkeley Mayor Jesse Arreguin and Democratic state Sen. Nancy Skinner joined a couple dozen people outside the Berkeley Patients Group waiting for the first sales.

“I’m stoked about this historic moment not just for Berkeley but for the state of California.” Arreguin said. “This is a long time coming.”

“now legally high on weed”

The illegals are drunk within an hour after they get off work.

There are efforts to maintain welfare benefits for those too poor to buy anything but their dope fix.

Like I Washington and Colorado, it ends with the deterioration of shopping areas where these stores are located into panhandler, beggar and homeless encampments. Place where people shop for food or other goods, where these pot stores come in...and they will start popping up in practically every shopping center...will be besieged with the growing drugged dregs of society - looking for a “handout” and a campsite, and crime will increase along with it.

This is the “Broken Window” theory gone nuclear.

The taxes are so high, no pun intended, that a black market is guaranteed. The state exise tax is 15%, city tax about 5%, and sales tax about 8%. The delivery services have their customers e-mail addresses and on-line menus. They can deliver the same product for a lot less money.

Here is how it will end, Jeff Sessions will swing into action faster than greased lightning, while nothing happens to Hillary and Comey.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nullification_(U.S._Constitution)

Nullification is back and now it’s the liberals doing it with immigration and marijuana.

Lessening the stranglehold of the federal government is a good thing.

I’m normally against civil forfeiture but I’d be okay with the federal going hog wild on the growers.

Not too long ago I saw a program that portrayed these people as innocent, absent minded hippies who could lose piles of money ... but you can’t tell me these guys don’t know where some bodies are buried.

Screw them all and make sure they can never become legitimate!

Well, we are the only country in the world where you become a millionaire riding a skateboard with a magazine and a TV show! What a country!
Not condoning the legalization, but the business of America is business. When ones ethics and morals are situational what else would one expect!

I get a kick out of some of the posts on this thread. A most of the US population already either lives in a state where mj is legal or are within reasonable driving distance of one of those states. The genie is out of the bottle.

When I was a kid I tried it. Smoked it between 7-10 times.

It made my eyes feel strange. I just didn’t care for it.

Some folks seem to think they couldn’t live with out it.

I haven’t had a problem living without it for nearly nearly 50 years.

Possession limit:

1. All the product from your six plants at home, must stay at home. If your plants are 19ft tall and yield 8 lbs each, you can keep it all. At home.
2. Outside the home the limit is one ounce, unless you are a registered medical user and then it can be six.

Interestingly, the police will not be able to obtain a search warrant because they smell raw marijuana in your car.
