He was one of the 2 arrested at the scene. Why he was arrested...who knows? I’m not counting on the media or police to give us the straight scoop

No one was taken to hospital

Apparently all were taken to the hospital

I think they use Hospital as a condition not necessarily a place.

The 32 year old driver was of ‘Afghan descent’, per the article. A 24 year old filmed the attack and had a bag of knives with him.

Maybe the motive was too much Hillsong. I’m sure the press will get to the bottom of it, right away! </sarc>

Looks like a publicity photo touting the new rolling stock with the older unit in the background. Note the 1970’s vintage RV air conditioning unit jimmied in there atop the cab.

Yes - but was also have older trams than that in service - a pure publicity photo probably would have used one of those (the old ones are also the iconic Melbourne trams).

Call it “the trolly” or “the tram.” Having “a train” requires a the capability to run variable-length consists of separable railcars. BART out here in the SF Bay Area would be an example.

I may have caused some confusion - the Flinders Street Station behind is the centre of a fairly large train network. You can't see any trains in the picture because they are all inside the station and lower down. But Melbourne has a large tram network as well and Flinders Street as the centre of the train network has a large number of tram using the streets around it so people can interchange.

This is depressing. I did not know Australia was having this kind of issue which is commonplace here in the USA.

It's quite new here - until recently there weren't all that many people of African descent in Australia - but over the last decade or so, that's changed mostly with refugees from the Sudan and similar areas, and some of them are not assimilating - especially the teens. Criminal gangs are forming (Apex is the best known of these).

Is this behavior somewhat wide spread in Australia, or is it limited to certain areas with high African immigrant population?

It's important to understand that most Australians live in or around the five major mainland state capital cities (Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth, and Adelaide) - we don't have all that many large cities or towns besides these. That means everything tends to be clustered around these cities that all have between one and five million people. They often tend to wind up with the same social problems around the same time - and that's true with this. Some immigrant groups (not all - but the Africans are ones that do seem to follows this pattern) tend to move to the same suburbs of the major cities and cluster there - but crimes like this don't tend to take place in their own neighbourhoods. They move en masse to rampage through other areas as seen in that video.

I have never heard of that kind of widespread behavior from Australian Aboriginals...I am correct in this assessment?

Pretty much - indigenous Australians either tend to be spread out across the suburbs so you don't get the gang effects, or if they are clustered together, it's in their own communities, quite a long way from the cities. There are some suburban areas where they cluster but for the most part those areas are fairly harmonious because they've been there a long time now.

That all makes sense.

Sigh. It has gotten to the point I won’t go to any public place unless I really know the dynamics well. Years ago, my wife and I used to go into Boston for the New Year’s Eve or 4th of July things, but not in a million years would I do that now.

Eh. Part of that is getting older, and part of it is just common sense now. Part of that is also that it is largely for young people...:)

Ah, so what we’d call a “transit hub” where riders can switch between several available modes.

THE man who deliberately mowed down 19 people at a busy Melbourne intersection had an appointment for mental health treatment on the day of the attack but did not show up, police said.

The driver, named by the Herald Sun as Saeed Noori, 32, has been revealed as having a history of mental illness and drug use, and was on a mental health plan.

Speaking on Friday morning, Victoria Police acting chief commissioner Shane Patton said the man had a medical appointment booked on Thursday.

“He is on a mental health plan and he was due for an appointment yesterday, which he missed,” Mr Patton said in an interview on Channel 9’s Today.

“During that preliminary interview with investigators who are looking at this matter, he spoke about dreams, he spoke about voices, but he also did attribute some of his actions to the poor treatment of Muslims.

What futurist writer say even up into the end of the 1980s would have suspected well over a billion people still living in retrograde religion in a retrograde society? Our ancestors probably disliked Islam, but didn’t see it as a serious threat, assuming these countries would have reformed well before the start of the 21st century.

Ah sad. So the media even over there are replacing Islam with mental illness?

I happen to suffer from a moderate mental illness. It doesn’t mean, and is insulting to even suggest, that it makes me any more likely to mow someone down than someone who is illness free.

I'm watching Australian television, and the (Acting) Chief Commissioner of the Victorian Police is clearly not ruling out terrorism. He's just saying police are not sure yet one way or the other as they have not been able to properly interview the suspect and the media are premature in excluding any motivation at this point.

The second man who was arrested has been released pending further investigation as to why he was carrying knives (which is an offence if you don't have a specific reason) but it not linked to the man still in custody. He was a bystander, not a passenger in the car.
